If you're going straight ahead, why would you take yourself out of the traffic streat only to force your way back in when the traffic starts moving again?
Why not just stay in stream before and through the junction and only when you've passed it, think about the gutter moves?
Each situation differs, as an example I might be left side filtering where unable to on right, end up waiting behind hgv / bus / someone pulled over, so to left of car behind it. Happens fairly frequently when I ride down Princess Parkway here in Manchester where at rush hour it's very stop start for about 4 miles so careful filtering is best option to make steady progress.
