  • im having some trouble removing some ofmega sq taper cranks they seem to be hella stiff i dont want to damage the arms tho? anyone got any good ideas?

  • Describe what you are attempting to do and how you have currently set about what you are attempting.
What tools and procedures you have invoked and how far along this series of steps you have travelled.

  • silly question, but are you using a crank pull?

  • Cut to the chase, ask Brick Lane to loan their angle-grinder.

  • angle grinder and WD-40.......job done.

  • 2 and a half years later and i'm having the same problem - trying to remove the cranks to replace the boogered bb. LBS, no luck. I have tried a few methods but have failed.
I have replacement cranks so both the cranks and bb are scrap - so if I angle grind through the spindle part of the bb showing (between the crank and the frame), crank off, job done?

  • Seems like a sledge hammer to crack a nut.

I take it these are square taper. If so, then use a proper crank puller, with an extension on the handle if necessary to provide more force.

  • If a normal crank puller won't work go a friendly garage (they do exist) And ask to use their ball joint splitter.

There's two types, you want this one -

I'll scratch the back of the cranks but they should come off in one piece without damaging the frame if you're careful with the hammer

  • Thanks.

We tried a similar approach as to the ball joint splitter, above - two gradually wedged pieces of metal gently hammered in but the crank didn't budge and I feared I would damage the frame. Maybe a more purpose built tool/wedge like that splitter would work better.
Yep, they are square tapered. I have not tried with a crank puller and don't know whether the lbs tried with a puller (just guessed they would have), will ask..
