  • cool, dont think my PC is good enough though

  • just checked the recommended hardware requirements

  • Brun for a start.

I fucking hate the 'defence industry' for a myriad of reasons, from the spurious PR bullshit it spouts, the fact that it trivialises the killing and maiming of civilians and the cosy relationship it has with government who waste massive amounts of public money on vanity projects.

Andy, I don't like the defence industry much either, but I do like beautiful engineering; be that the Jaguar E-Type, the Moulton bikes (lovely), or the SU-27 Flanker (or) MiG-29 Fulcrum. I don't admire the B-29 Enola Gay, because what it stands for can never be good. I'm with you all the way from that persepctive Andy.

In case we forget, bicycles were used as tools in WW 1, to transport fighters more quickly to their destinations.

Yes, come on Andy, you have to admire his logic here, especially when you consider the myriad non-military uses that "bombers" and "fighters" are put to.

    Funny how?

  • Talking of derailed threads, this beauty had a linear bomb bay where the nukes just fell out the back. However, being a carrier-launched plane, the bombs had a tendency to flop onto the deck during the catapult sequence. They gave up and turned it into a very successful recon aircraft.

    Funny ha ha.

  • Not surprising that this thread had taken off (sorry) on a cycling forum...there's a nice synergy between bikes and planes.

It goes back much further than 531. The Wright brothers were bicycle makers with a side project.

  • Valkyrie AND a Tu-160? Bravo.

  • XB-70 is particularly awesome - the weight of a B-52 and the speed of an SR-71

  • Maybe not the looks.

  • C'mon, every other angle than that is attractive. :-D

Winston, anyone that plays the moron, doesn't look particularly clever, and certainly not intellectual. Andy and yourself, are clearly anti-war-machine, and I wholly understand that. But, this country, the UK, is in most part, an island, and has had to be pretty good at war, to defend it self from being carved up by the French, or Spanish, or whoever, from hundreds of years ago.

Making war machines keeps your odds of being taken over, reduced. Would other armies agree to only arming their men with staves, if the UK offered to do so first? Would Argentina (a war I disagreed with by the way) have kept to their own legal agreement, and left the Falklands in UK hands, if the resistance was staves and slingshots? No.

The defence industry is dirty, but protecting what is yours, is not the same thing. I (rather hysterically) objected to the thread on knives, as I have a pathological dislike for them, so I sympathise with not liking planes that are designed for killing people. But countries need to be defended, from the sea, on the ground, and from the air. There is a lot of beautiful engineering in the design, and testing of these fighter/bomber/military planes; and I am an admirer of that beauty, and innovation. And of course, the naked power, of the engines, and the speeds attained.

A world without weapons is a utopia, and frankly Winston, I wish you were there. You really are a dismal, and tragically uniformed bore. I don't mind when Andyp disagrees with me, and its on numerous matters, but I respect his intellect.

  • playing the intellectual doesn't look particularly clever, unless you actually are.

  • tragically uniformed

Not the first person to comment on my bad dress sense.

  • Su-47. It may be a repost, but so what.

  • Four pages and no mention of the Hawker Hunter! http://www.flickr.com/photos/rinkratz/4271884701/

  • The Saab Viggen was quite impressive (to look at) also.

  • A4 skyhawks. When you absolutely need to blow up ships, use American planes and french missiles.
