  • in for thursday

  • In for tonight. But only for ano hour. Need to be away by 8

  • Bloody work ruins mam thursday night again. Stuck at work so cant make it now :(

  • Rain! Looking unlikely for today?
Any developments on Thursday about this tourney?

  • steady drizzle rascal here.. not looking good

i'd be happy to go to the court for a chat about tourney at least though.
Only me and matt played thursday..
Theres a post on a Glasgow site (polo or fixed) saying that grass event is postponed and newcastle is on for having SHIT3. Says matt or tristan will send more details or summat..
So we could do with getting sorted whats happening- poster, spoke cards , trophies, calling council to see if we can book court( if not letting locals know its happening(posters/flyers again), teams etc...
Matts on holiday for a week
    so
anyone in for meeting up this afternoon at court, despite weather?

  • now snowing

  • SNOW! :D

I'll be heading up west in a bit so could have a knock-about at Elswick 1pm? The weather might have calmed down by then.

Can the tournament be on the Sunday (18th March) instead? Seeing as we never play on Saturdays...

  • Unlikely I'll be driving into toon for this, Ol. Perhaps we could sort it 'en forum'?

So far the following have been mentioned. Some additional thoughts in bold...

    • Call council to see if we can book court (if not letting locals know its happening
    • Liaise with Scottish teams
    • Poster/flyer
    • **Banner for the court
      *** Spoke cards
    • Trophies
    • Agree teams
*** Agree format (print brackets, etc)
*** Few tweaks to the court (filling gaps, etc)
    • Goals
    • Refs
      *** Alternative/practice/throw-ins court
    • Map of immediate area showing location of court, alt court(s), shops, pubs, toilets, parking, etc
      ***** Food/drinks/refreshments
    • Toilets
    • Bins
    • Shelter
    • Risk assessment

**No doubt other ideas will arise out of discussion

  • luke- its the 17th because it is replacement event for the grass tourney which everyone had in the diaries . it'll be good to see if you're as good on a saturday as on sunday or if its just a fluke..luke

good list john. Word is your the nuts at a bit of designing..Fancy knocking summat up/ bashing summat out /boshin one off as they say?...

I'd be happy to make some trophies if needs be...

is the last item on list a little joke..?

  • [QUOTE=Dayron Robles;2738716]SNOW! :D

I'll be heading up west in a bit so could have a knock-about at Elswick 1pm? The weather might have calmed down by then.

maybe a knock about at the courts by the alotments on nunsmore...?

  • Yes, If John can make a poster and Oliver a trophy that will be great!

I will tell the locals (trying to book it would be pointless) and make an event on Facebook. What time should I say for start/finish?

Closest pub / toilets / shelter is the Queens Arms at the top of Shield Street.

    • yes Oliver I'll head up your way now.
  • As for a "warm-up court", here are directions to the one outside Molineux Court: http://g.co/maps/4tzkd - it is 5 minutes away from The Polo Direct Arena by bike. It's too small for matches but very good for shooting practice. Can't think of anywhere better close by, although we probably won't need one if it's just Edinburgh and Glasgow coming.

  • Fancy knocking summat up/ bashing summat out /boshin one off as they say?...

I'm pretty certain I'll be bashing one out before the weekend
However, my main computer is broken right now(with all my main design software) and I have no colour printing facilities at the moment either. I'll gladly help, but I've got a feeling this might be better taken on by someone else...

I'd be happy to make some trophies if needs be...

    Nice one, Oliver

is the last item on list a little joke..?

Kinda, but not really. It would be useful to say that we've done a risk assessment when talking to the Council. Makes us look more serious, etc. Main reason for doing it though, is because we don't have any liability insurance (too costly). If there's an accident and someone decides to sue us, it'll be important to show that we've done what could be reasonably expected of us, in terms of evaluating potential risks. It can be something as simple as a note scribbled on the back of a fag packet and we don't actually need to do anything about any perceived risks, but if we've done a risk assessment, we're 'covering our arses with paperwork', as they say....

    Either way, I'll do it.

Stuff which still needs thinking about:

    • A small amount of sponsorship could be made to go a long way. It would be nice to be able to offer something to our visiting teams (Refreshments, goody bag, etc) without having to charge a Tourney entry fee. Also, we might need some petty cash if we wanna make new goals! I appreciate that it's short notice, but could someone look into this?

    • Sketch map of the location of the Tourney, with surrounding useful places - shop, toilet, pub, practice court, etc. Direction to the court for out-of-towners would be handy. Anyone with reasonable familiarity with the area could do this.

    • Timber or similar for filling gaps in the fence

    • Format/bracket printouts. At this stage we don't know how many teams we'll have, so I'd probably print several bracket options (4, 5, 6, etc) Don't suppose we'll get more than 6 visiting teams, TBH. That should cover all eventualities. I'm guessing we're gonna use a double elim or single elim format. Double would give teams more games, yes? Printable brackets can be found here. Could someone take this on? If someone else can do the design work on the poster/banner/spokecards, etc, then I can do this one.

    • Shelter. I've got a small gazebo which could be put up courtside as a shelter for organizers, refs, scorers and for waiting players if the weather's a bit iffy. Happy to receive better suggestions, though.

    • Bins could be a coupla bin-bags, cable-tied to the fence. We don't want anyone to say we left a mess. I think this sounds like a job for an environmental activist like Luke ;)

    • Goals. I'll happily make some more goals/improve the goals we've got. It seems I've already got quite a lot on, though, so it would be helpful if someone else could take this on. At the very least, we need nets making and fitting, maybe crossbars, and weights(sandbags) to hold goals down. Any takers? Again, If someone else can do the design work on the poster/banner/spokecards, etc, then I'll do this one.

    • Refs will need timing device (Phone seems the easiest) and a whistle/buzzer/other noisemaker. Scoreboard? Is Steve's electronic scoreboard an option?

    Have I missed anything?
    Am I doing it right?

  • Fair dos on the assessment and if your happy to do it that'd be great john.
Do you want to talk to the council too?

As for design if you cant get a computer/ get computer fixed, PHIL!, arent you a bit hot at that sort of thing aswell?

I could take on the new goals and finding timber for gaps if your busy John...

Luke should draw the maps as its his manor we're using, wudda you reckon?

Tristan! What are your thoughts on all this man? You any good at getting sponsorship for world class tourneys such as this?

  • areet fellas, if there is any thing i can do to help out let me know, for banners n posters i can print colour upto a3+ (329 x 483 mm)

  • A3 colour posters and a gazebo. It's looking good.

Yes John, double elimination would mean more games than single, but with 4-6 teams we should just play round robin (everyone plays everyone league format) + playoffs at the end if you want some proper "cup final" excitement.

Good practice today Beaky, call me if you've got any free time through the week for another knockerbooot.

  • yeah cheers luke.

Trophie is underway as of this morn. Got some net too for goals- found it in a game keepers bag i got. Loads of nets for ferreting. All tied together. And attached to the goals. Like a goal should be. that do? Got cross bars sorted too. Will need to take your goals of you john next weekend if thats alright?

Nice on with the printer steve... Anyone gonna grab the design by its massive horn?...

  • Here is a Facebook event for the tournament: http://www.facebook.com/events/318202554903467/

Anyone who uses it can "invite friends" to come watch. I've invited Glasgow and Edinburgh Bike Polo too.

Also, attached is the poster I made to advertise regular polo sessions. If Steve can print it we can save effort by putting it up at the same time we go round with posters for the tournament.

  • i will run off half a dozen copies for ya, altho you will have to put them up some where they wont get wet

  • Yeah sweet, I'll put them in cafes and pubs around Heaton and Shieldfield/Sandyford. Should get seen quite well especially if they'll be A3.

  • yer ill bring em to polo on thurs, we still playin at gateshead thurs

  • I think so, but only for a couple more weeks then it'll be light enough to play in Newcastle again. :D

  • in regards to sponsorship, i reckon i can get something sorted, but only if we can get the sponsors on the posters, as well as having some kind of coverage of the event, photos, video, writeup etc.

    thoughts?

i still need to get the time booked off work :@

  • also, i think itd be good to charge a small entry fee, that way we could put on a bbq midday or something?

nice one oliver for sorting goals out, definately the most needed improvement for tourney quality court....

im happy to take on reffing responsibilities, as im sure everyone else will be.
il message jono and get an updated set of rules.

il contact colin and get teams confirmed.

    anything else that needs sorting?

my day off is thursday, so if we could have some plans worked out by then that'd be good :)
