My rat has it's ds crankarm pedal thread stripped, but as the BSA chainring matches the bike nicely and to keep in line with the 'rat-rules', I'm looking for a cheap solution for this as I'm broke.
I know about helicoils, but I just moved house and the one lbs I went by never heard of them.
He told me he could weld it up and re-thread it, but that's probably costing me 'a lot' on labour.Any solutions I'm overlooking?

My rat, as it stands. Will be swapping out the pedals for some that don't try to cripple my feet every time I ride it, and fitting double straps. Also swapping to some drops soon.

If you want a DIY Solution, Ceeway sell a set of reamer-taps (LH tool, RH tool, and a couple of threads).
The lower portion of the tool is a reamer and the upper portion's a tap, the set costs £24.50 so you ream to the required diameter, tap the insert outer thread into the crank arm, screw the insert onto the pedal thread and then screw the pedal into the crank arm...
http://www.ceeway.com/economy%20workshop%20and%20framebuilding.htm See codes 230 and 229.Perhaps someone on here has that set...?
One other option - I'll take a look through my shed and see what I've got, and PM you with photo's - yours for the cost of postage

hey Bjorn, you could get someone to weld it and then re tap the thread though al of those would need someone that was 'engineery'...ie...way beyond the savvy of most 'wipe clean' bike workshops, if you are reasonably good at doing things then you could buy a helicoil kit yoursefl and have reasonably successful results...and if it went titzup, welding the thing and retapping would still be an option, if you look on fleabay or ask an auld fella you could fid a bsa crank without tooooo much bother...
if you are anywhere near the wick then I could help you sort something out.
pm me if anything sounds useful

There's quite a few BSA cottered cranks/sets on eBay the now, ranging from £6.99 for a pretty ratty old driveside only to £40 for a minty chrome set. Even at £40 I imagine that'll be less than you'd pay for any kind of welding/retapping/helicoiling type job.

Cheers guys. I was looking at that one too, M_V, but it was a 44t and I like my ratio now at 48/18, so I let it pass.
I'll just need to have a walk through town to check out some shops and see what they can come up with at what price.
Moved to one of the bike capitals of Holland and I don't even have one to ride atm. Wack. -

needs clerpz 'n' strerpz.
otherwise dream bike.** #so-much-integrity**
Really? having a rat look frame with loads of brand new bits on it doesn't exactly make it a rat bike (with 'integrity') (admittedly his bars and pedals are worn too).
Not that I like it but at least that thing above (green wheels) is used and worn all over.

it does make it a rat bike for me.
