Not strictly a plane, but a rocket-powered aircraft - the North American X-15. It belongs to NASA, but it was USAF & NASA pilots that tested it, and some advances from there found their way to normal jet fighters.
A thing of exquisite and yet a quietly savage beauty, it was the first to break Mach 4, 5 and 6. It reached speeds of just over 4,000mph / 6,000kph. What a machine. The pilots were all special too. One of them was none other than Neil Armstrong. Yes, the same one. Legends.
