Plane / Planes / Aircraft / Aeroplane / Airplane appreciation

Aren't land mines intended to wound and/or cripple a single person? So as to tie up enemy resources as the poor bastard needs to be hauled from the field with his leg fucked up and screaming his head off?

I don't really know- not a landmine expert to be honest.
