There's an old film of 'the flying bedstead' knocking around showing early tests for vertical take off systems. My granddad is one of the engineers in the hangar. My dad was so proud when he saw it by accident on Discovery as he'd never seen anything of what he did as this was cutting edge research at the time. Unfortunately he died before anything ever became operational from the project.
Sadly, I have nothing further to add to this thread as the Vulcan has already been posted.

Things to tell the grandkiddies my friend. Your granddad was part of the reason we came through the war as a free country. I salute his efforts and his memory.

I never actually met him as he was long gone by the time I was born but my dad used to talk about him a lot. Half of that was about all the test pilots who used to stay with them and the non rationed food they used to get during the war as a result.
As I followed both my grandad and dad into engineering, I was given my granddads Rolls Royce Aerospace tool kit as a graduation present. Its locked up well away from any danger and is probably my most treasured possession.

We did a project at primary school about this plane. I can't remember anything about it, other than I enjoyed it.
We also did a project on the Outer Hebrides, which might slow the pace somewhat if I post some photos.

how best to measure the "bestness" of military aircraft?.... given their intended purpose, is it the body count?
-

I don't remember that one in Top Trumps.

Also, they are designed to kill 1-2 people at a time- that's crap compared to (for example) a land-mine.

Any taker for opening Land-mine thread?
