  • Finally got round to testing a few routes out and putting a 60 miler together from different parts of them.

Aim to meet between 10 and 10.30am on March 10th at Clapham South Tube (on the grass, and set off towards Mordor (as shown on le map)....

The plan will be roughly as follows :-

    10.30 - Start

11.45ish - Stop #1 will be at the The Cock Inn, just south of the M25
    http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=The+Cock+Inn+Headley&hl=en&ll=51.279528,-0.274658&spn=0.09256,0.262642&sll=51.452632,-0.298846&sspn=0.011259,0.03283&oq=The+Cock+Inn&gl=uk&hq=The+Cock+Inn+Headley&t=h&z=13&layer=c&cbll=51.279426,-0.274525&panoid=zK-sezr60zqQ-7XPPruXSg&cbp=12,16.07,,0,-1.67
for a beer/lemonade/chips etc. and set off by 12.45 swinging West over Mill lane and one of the best, wide downhill straights I've found so far.
On through Leatherhead town centre and Cobham (with a quick stop for water and snacks if necessary).
Then upping the pace a little to aim for The Four Horseshoes in Chobham for lunch for around 2pm.

There are plenty of benches out front and a small green next to the pub to sit on with drinks and food, and (hopefully) get a glimpse of sun!

Aim to head off from there at 3.15 which should get us to Richmond Hill for a final beer or 2 at The Roebuck and a lovely view over the Thames to the West.

Any upright bikes welcome - fixeh, SS, geared... whatever floats your boat - just make sure your tyres are road worthy, fully pumped up before departing, and that everyone has at least 1 *i*nnertube on them.
Most likely ending the ride with the sun starting to set so bring good lights, waterproof/windproof top just in case... etc. etc.

Hope to see you on the 10th!

  • Would love to! But my old man visits town that day so best not

  • Ah, that's a shame. Never mind - might do it every 4 or 6 months depending on the weather, and whether it's popular. :)

  • I've been looking for a decent route into London from Surrey.

Out of interest, what's the route from Chobham to Richmond like in terms of traffic / scenery / road condition etc?

    In! :O

  • Chobham onwards, for about 15 miles is nearly all tree enclosed country lanes.

Miles 11-25 & 35-58 are all very scenic and talking a few cars per minute. Morden to Esher can be a little busy at times, similarly 30-35 is good to get out of the way as is the mile from Hampton Court bridge to the entrance to Bushy Park.

Other than that I thoroughly enjoy the rest.

I did an extended version of this ride round to West Drayton on Monday and the only trouble I had was after 70 miles

  • not sure I haz any "unnertubes" does that mean, me no can go?

  • In! :O

Chances are I'll be doing this route as training every Saturday possible
(although hangovers, laziness, catching up on tv may take precedence occasionally ;) )

  • not sure I haz any "unnertubes" does that mean, me no can go?

    Har-d-har

Unnertubbs or innertibbs :P come along - hoping for a glimpse of sun, 4 or 5 beers and some overdue mild countryside weather!

Have I missed something? I'm half way round my route right now, and It's great fun

  • This looks great but I have friends visiting on the Saturday night and it'll be a late one. I'd love to come along to this though so I'll see what I can sort out.

  • Would have loved to join you, but it is the better half's birthday on the 10th :(

Hope that you get good weather for what looks like a lovely ride.

    sorry!
    i was using ie9...
your route was just a white box
fired up the fox and all is well!

  • :)

Just got back AT LAST! 3:51 in the saddle but including a detour down through the valley to Box Hill, and back up again.

Thinking a good pace will be about 4.5hrs so nice and casual(ish) and broken up in to roughly 3x1.5hr pieces with a 1/2hr break and a 1hr break.

Felt punishing today but it's really pleasant at a slightly slower speed, with tons of gorgeous countryside to gaze at.

will be straight off the train after a night ride to brighton, should be fun :)

  • I would make one minor change - coming out of Epsom and going to Tattenham Corner/Tadworth. The view over Epsom Down's race-course is spectacular!
Unfortunately I'm working this day, otherwise I'd be in for sure!

  • Funny you should say that - I just did a lap over Box Hill via Epsom downs yesterday. The view really is pretty damn good but I was slightly awestruck by the view going up zig-zag lane! Spectacular in the sun!

The only problem with taking the route over Epsom Downs is the relentless shallow climb up to the racecourse. Saying that it's probably not too bad if there's no wind unlike yesterday

    Yes babes!! Chips.

Please can i join at Mordor station? It's like 0.5miles from me. 10.45am?

  • (or you're all welcome to swing by mine for an early pee stop)

  • Potentially. Whats the ETA in Richmond?
Have to be back in Norths for a P-A-R-T-Y.
