You can usually get various top cap heights. Nice to see you found a simple and functional solution.
Now leave a 5mm spacer above the stem, and draw around it. Saw the top of the steerer off 1mm below the line,with a hacksaw. Then rebuild with the 5mm spacer above the stem. Its a good idea to have the steerer extend above the stem, for better clamping.
