  • What a great community you have here...

Bike theft is so high in Oxford i'm a bit scared to buy a bike to use here, but I think I will still end up with my first fixie soon! :)

    Just read these two threads:

    Locks that work
    http://www.lfgss.com/thread17938.html

    How to lock your bike

And in a place like Oxford, where a significant amount of people don't even lock their bike to anything, you'll be reet. Two Kryptos and your bike will never be the easy option.

  • He has been all over England targeting several bicycle shop, made off with £3,000 (or so) worth of bicycle from Evans.

Wow. Where? Just one bike or the combined total of all his thefts?

  • It would be easy to steal £3k worth of bike in one go. Hell even in the Evans sale it would be easy

  • Wow. Where? Just one bike or the combined total of all his thefts?

he was seen in Manchester, and within a week later, London targeting several Evans as well as other bicycle shops, we have his picture hanging up in the break room.

£3,000 were the estimate combination from Evans Cycles.

Thanks for the advice. I know how to lock up well fortunately, cause I always have done, even in my quieter hometown :)

My plan was two of those yeah. I know they can be cut off to free a bike from a rack, but two is probably too much trouble/risk, even at night. Good to hear my plan echoed.

Thanks for the thread references :)

  • This makes me feel very uneasy about locking my bike at lcc (i study there).
Every day i lock up either my ratbike (oversize track frame with sugino 75s easton ec90's hed 3 etc) or my carbon road bike. Ive never had any problems there having losked there for the past three years.

    What locks were being used?
Were they locked to the railings of the actual bike racks?

just trawled through this thread and realised i had never replied: my bike was locked to the railings not the rack, and the lock was a cable one and was pants. Have since replaced my bike and got myself a couple of brutal U Locks. I wouldn't feel worried about locking it up if you have decent locks though tbh, i was just stupid

  • My friend Clare had her red Brompton stolen from outside Haggerston Station the night before last. It has a broken front mudguard and has a ladies saddle. If anyone spots anything, then please let me know.

    Cheers,

    Roddy

  • Hi guys!
My mate had his bike stolen last Wednesday. I don't know the exact details but from what he said it was nicked from outside his front door (gated locked staircase!), he left it for less 30 seconds to drop the bag and the bike was gone (I believe he lives in Clapham).
It's a green cinelli gazzette 60cm, silver phil hubs low flange with h plus son rims (black mat), silver miche primato cranks , thomson seatpost in black and silver stem, selle rolls saddle, easton monkey bar handle bar, columbus carbon forks.
Please keep your eyes open and drop me a PM if you will hear or see anything suspicious!
    Thanks a lot!

    Lola

This. At my old house we had a couple of nice-ish bikes leaned against the wall in the front garden unlocked and for all to see and they never moved. In general the bikes that get thieved in Oxford are either unlocked shoppers, or nice road bikes locked with shoe laces. Two kryptos means no-one will even look twice.

  • nice fuji track with a gold finger brake down brick lane at the weekend...

    Hi,

Thanks for the reassurance. When I get my first FG, it'll be in my room, but if I get sick of having no space whatsoever, I will save for 2 Kryptos, and be less concerned! Hopefully with some work back home over the summer i'll be able to invest in a pair, in case I ever have to bike-commute.

Out of interest, whereabouts were you? I'm in Headington, pretty close to Cowley.

    Matt.

  • How are you going to lock it when you go out though?

  • I have a couple of U locks and D locks at the moment, but not Krypto quality... also don't plan on leaving a nice bike anywhere for long unattended, just want one for a nice daily morning/evening ride really, with no destination, if you know what I mean!

  • Please keep an eye out for my bike that got stolen from the supposedly secure garage beneath my flat in Aldgate on Sat/Sun. It's an ancient no-name frame that's been painted metallic purple with components that were mostly bought from here (b43 wheels, ITM stem, rolls saddle).

Will likely have mis-matched wheels now as the rear b43 is still locked to the stand.

    But with chrome forks

It's pretty massive, so hopefully the scum that nabbed it has fallen off it and hurt themselves.

  • ^ That's a shame mate. How was it locked for the wheel to still be there?

  • Out of interest, whereabouts were you? I'm in Headington, pretty close to Cowley.

I live in London now, but before I lived in a few places in Oxford: Cowley, Iffley Road, Osney Island. I locked bikes on the street and leaned against walls for days on end in all those places and never had so much as a light go walkies. I miss Oxford!

  • ^ That's a shame mate. How was it locked for the wheel to still be there?

Locked through the rear wheel only - it's one of those semi-vertical stands. I had stupidly thought it would be ok considering you need a keyfob to get in or out of the garage, and it's massive, and there are way nicer bikes down there. Housemate's rear wheel got taken at the same time, so I'd imagine they're riding around on that.

  • ^Is your housemate's rear wheel QR? If it is it would be a real shame if for anything bad to happen to the thieving shit.

  • Nah, both mine and housemates were standard, non-qr.

  • Disappointing.

  • Anyone know of someone missing a Colnago c50?

Just seen a sketchy looking guy walking around with one in cycle surgery in Shepherds Bush. Think it had look cleats, black bar tape & a campag group set with a carbon chain set.

  • A C50? Wow.

  • Yup. He was early 20s with a checked red hoodie and jeans with big black skater shoes on. Didn't look like your average c50 owner, hence the post.

  • Report it to the Cycle Task Force? They might have heard about that--very unlikely that the owner wouldn't report that one stolen, with a good description. Chances are the thief has no idea what he's got, or he wouldn't be parading it around so openly. Then again, he could just be a spectacularly clueless rich person who dresses down, you never know.
