Are you using CM7?
I found just using that, and getting rid of general bloatwear, and widgets etc improved things.
Lots of people swear by things like Juice defender, but I've never felt the need.

Rooted my phone last night, wow this is good, noticed a great improvement.
How can I go about improving the battery life now? What are kernels?
Kernals are the bits that let the software talk to the hardware. I've never really needed any battery stuff, as I've been charging every night for much longer than I've had a smart phone.
But grab titanium backup and get rid of a lot of the junk on the phone (look on XDA for a list on what you can get rid of, or else backup everything first so if you do need it you can get it back)

Running juice defender.
Yes I'm running CM7 - Not sure what you mean regarding bloatware, when I rooted it it seems pretty minimal.
battery is now down to 89% took it off charge at 7am this morning, thinking of installing an additional kernal for the battery life, which should make a difference.

The first thing I'd personally do, is make a backup using CWM before attempting anything else. Beyond that, install titanium backup pro (worth the small fee), backup your apps and then freeze the ones you havent/don't use. It's quite noticeable how your battery life will improve doing this. Also, quite randomly, turning your phone off and removing the battery for a few minutes can also help to force close some background processes which tend to run after a custom rom reboot.

How the fuck did I miss a post saying exactly what I've just said from over an hour ago? Go Branwen.
Battery trick still stands though.

OK now backing up.
Apparently there is a kernel which see a significant improvement in battery life, I'll try it once I get home It's called tiamat.
-
• #7085
Installed Tiamat managed to do it some how at work, apparently it helps with the initial 10% drop off of battery when you've got it rooted.
-
• #7086
that 10% if it's similar to the samsung thing is a number thing, not an actual drop in power, my phone almost instantly drops a few percent when you take it off charge. It's to do with the way the power is measured rather than how much is left.

Ah right ok.
Also going to try Juice Defender looks like It's worth getting.
-
• #7088
I could be wrong though , I ain't got a desire. Some kernels will give you better battery life so feel free to try, they might not work as well in other ways. Changing radio can help if you get one suited to your network and area too

So the kerenal I installed was that just for the battery?

What improvements does rooting the Desire like this give spenceey?
Does it improve the infernal storage situation?

What sorted the storage issue for me once I'd rooted it was moving the dalvic cache to the SD card.... I seem to remember theres a small flash you can do that moves it. Made a HUGE difference!
-

Yep you can improve the internal storage, select if you want all apps on the sd card (great move) I haven't actually designated some of my sd card to the phone internal storage yet as I didn't see the point.
You can change the speed of the CPU (under clocked mine) so I should get more out of the battery.
At the moment I'm trying to decide whether having Juice Defender will free me up with more battery. The fact you can have every single app and process close down when the screen turns off is a big plus.

I'm still getting my head around a lot of the settings though. I've calibrated the battery so I'll see now what the life is like.
-
• #7094
Battery calibrated, then ran down to 0.
Charged up fully last night from empty ran this morning with juice defender - It's now reporting a 1.4x battery life compared to without Juice Defender.

Damn, I'm too old... and I could really do with £50. That could be a slap up meal for Fizz and I.
Ho hum.

Anybody else finding the weather dropped off on their phone (i've an HTC Desire)?
It used to update all the time and show me at whatever location, London Borough, Lambeth, Lewisham etc.. Now I'm lucky to get London or just United Kingdom
