I know the little subscription icons aren't a 100% match on that functionality... but they're still on the right and do indicate what you're subscribed to and by default that is only what you've participated in.
I can add another icon in that space specifically to indicate participation, but it overlaps a lot with subscriptions, very few people have threads they participated in but haven't subscribed to and vice versa.
