Installing an ahead (threadless) headset

  • can someone point me in the right direction please? (i did search). Also do I really need to grease up properly (the headset not myself)?

for reference: I have a condor set going onto a dolan 1in alu streering-tube and alpina forks.

  • thanks dude... for some reason I didnt actually google anything to do with an ahead. For reference this is a great way to flame people: http://lmgtfy.com/

  • You're lucky it wasn't Hippy that answered.

  • touché

  • I whacked in Matt_r_p's headset half pissed using a rubber mallet in the garden at West Beers.

    It's a piece of piss.

    Damn fucking right!

  • Repped.

Oh yeah. Can't do that. :(

yes you can, click on comment & 'i approve' but without the green blobs of acceptance it's mostly worthless. It goes on your CP.

  • Charco, you almost made me pee with LOL! I did know that old bean. But thanks anyway.
I guess I must seem really, really old eh? :)

  • seriously, is it more or less safe to push the crown races into the frame with a rubber mallet? i was looking at a tool http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Cyclus_Headset_Press/5300003485/ . It's good price specailly with the voucher code for fiver off but it's something that doesn't get used very often :-)

You can headset press for about £5.

Looong bolt, 2 nuts and some appropriately sized washers...

  • Hammer, piece of wood, take your time, don't drink beforehand.

  • Spot on guys :-)

  • Need some advice.

Basically I bough & put in the cups from the FSA Orbit x headset in my Leader 722ts, I have a tifosi pista fork to go with it. thing is i have a small problem.

The bit (sorry don't know the name) that goes between the bottom of the steerer tube & the bearings won't go all the way to the bottom of the steerer tube.

This is what the bottom of the steerer tube looks like ..

This is how the bit (google tells me it's a crown race?) fits

It won't go all the way to the bottom....

I was advised by one of the gents at the Hackney workshop tonight to go to My LBS see if they have the tool to fit over it in order to push it in. Or the bottom of the steerer tube might have to be gently and slightly sanded down.

Is this what I'll have to do or will i have to find a slightly larger crown race? I assume it wouldn't be possible to put a spacer under it?

Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated

    Cheers.

  • Help bummpp please....

  • You need to press the crown race on properly (ie using the correct tool), or else its likely that it won't seat entirely straight, which could effect the bikes handling and put an uneven load on the headset bearings. Take it to a bike shop, any with a workshop should have the correct tool and will be able to fit it for you. They will also be able to assess if the steerer needs any attention. I've fitted an FSA headset to a Tifosi fork before, it was pretty tight but not a problem with the correct tools.

  • You have to whack the bugger on.
There is a tool, basically a bit of pipe. Plenty of youtubes.

  • you should put something on top of the race before whacking it down. A bike shop should have something like this

  • that's the proper answer. However in the past I have pushed it down as far as it will go, installed the forks in the head tube then bounced the front wheel down. Probably really bad for the bearings but fuck it.

  • I still like my hitting the crown race with a pedal spanner while trying to install it on my full carbon forks technique

  • Done it! Went to my lovely LBS and they showed me how it's done. Tool n all. Nice eye opener.

    Cheers guys :)
