Are you going for Index or STI's? I would build it up with a nice 105 group. Not that expensive but works fine and looks good too :)

You can pick up some pretty cheap modern groupsets on ebay.

In fact if you want a cheap modern g/set this looks like it might end up going fucking cheap.

I'd say anything up to £150 is a good price -

Shimano = STI
Campy = Ergo
Sram = Double Tapis there noticable differences between how each system works, or is it essentially the same system with 3 different names on it?
thanks for advice by the way :)

They're all fairly similar in function but each brand has a different shaped hood that means some people don't find comfortable and each brand all have a different way of shifting.
It would be easier for you to go to your local shop and have a look as I'm sure my description will be fairly hopeless. -

Whats the rear spacing? 126mm is 7 speed, 130mm is 8+ speed (although if you have 126mm it will spread to 130mm so you will not be limited to an old groupset).
A safe bet for period correct would be something like Shimano 600 Ultegra (Tri-colour) I think the last groupset I sold was £150 posted (excluding wheels).
Campagnolo is fashionable, generally better finished and aesthetically the best looking. Shimano light to use, functional and good value.
Are you doing anything about the paint i.e respray?

Unless I'm mistaken, your local shop will be Steel's? If so, then go in and have a word with Joe Waugh himself and he should be able to point you in the right direction. Not sure of the exact period of your frame, but they did have Dave Yates building the Waugh branded frames for a while.

its 130mm spaced, i know that it is a custom frame, built in the 80s by dave yates, made from reynolds 531c tubing. apparently its a faux pro.
sanddancer, went into steels, seeing if there was anywhere i could get some replacement decals (as id love to have it re-sprayed) but unfortunately, no luck :(
anyone got any recommendations for restoration places?
going into my lbs tomorrow to test some different shifters....

I believe Dave Yates will supply decals for any of his frames, but only alongside a £150-£200 paintjob.
been wanting to start a geared project for ages, but just kept making excuses/adapting my brooklyn build.
the time has come to build this frame up properly. it has been everything from a singlespeed shopper build, fixed beater to a polo bike.
so here it is, warts and all -
the emphasis for this is going to be second hand everything. i know absolutely fuck all about gears, brakes etc, so would appreciate lots of input from you experienced folk.
i guess the first big question is, what parts are period correct for this?
please don't suggest anything tan or leather. too grim.
and - shimano or campagnolo?
im willing to commit a decent amount of money into this, but obviously nothing along the lines of dura ace/sram red/super record. at least not the modern stuff anyway, too pricey...
