Give me a reason to use either of those brands over others? Look pedals might've been the shit 15 years ago but they've been surpassed nowadays and they're overpriced.
If Speedplays weren't so maintenance hungry and annoying I'd recommend them too.

I told her to get the 105's in the end. Can't go wrong with Shimano #hippy
thanks for the offer though Sumo#hippy is always right
I think I have some worn but working SPD-SL pedals that would do the job kicking about.. some SPDs too.. and some ATACs.. and some.. yeah I've tried 'em all man I've tried them all.

Settled on the Aliums in the end. Will report back how I get on.

I think I got it down, two days and only 1 fall - even that was caused by a cat not getting out off the way whilst practising.

Now I want some Times for my Brompton. I want a touring pedal so I was looking at the 'Time All Road' pedals. Is anyone using them? Thumbs up or down?
-
• #308
More annoyance than useful if you don't mind constantly flipping the pedals round.

Ive been googling this for a while, but havnt found a decent answer. ive got some old italian leather road shoes with slotted cleats, but they also have 3 bolts for modern SPD-SL style cleats. so im thinking of using them. the question is would SPD SL pedals be alright when doing whip skids and skip stops and the like? or am i going to find them unclipping on me all the time...?
ta.

i would never whipskid while using clips
-
• #311
Don't know what a 'whip-skid' is but if you're worried about pulling out of spd-sl's just crank up the tension, personally I'd just advise purchasing a brake...
-
• #312
best off with time atacs kerob, spd-sl are ok but even with full tension can pop out very easily when doing madskidz.
-
• #313
yeah ive got a brake, and i use it, but frankly every now and then i like being a kid and doing some skidz!! ;)
thanks Malasian, ive persuaded a friend to let me borrow his spd-sl's for a couple of days to try out so il give them a go and see whats what. Do the atac's use a 3 bolt or two bolt pattern? and if two bolt, is it possible to use two of the three bolt holes on a road shoe?
cheers.

I used to use spds when I raced bmx, really liked them, don't think I'd use them on a road bike though, duno why
Used to use look keos (like most folk as there first road clip less) swapped to 0 degree float cleats and loved them
Swapped to shimano cos I wanted black pedals, since realised they weigh more so will go back to keos soon. The 105 5700 are very nice though

any opinions on Exustar road pedals?

Also in the lookout for some good road cleats for some nice long rides, won't be doing any mad skills, what are people riding?

Good quality, weight, and functionality for the monies.
Thats just me rehashing internet opinion though. I havent used them myself.

Looking for pedal/shoe combo that will be suitable for both my road bike and fixed hhsb (will definitely keep cages and straps on my beater).
Research today has taught/shown me:
Time ATAC - best all round system for madskidz and longer rides
Look Keo / SPD-SL - best long distance road pedals, not good for madskidz
Eggbeaters / SPD - good for mtb, create hotsposts on feet and tiring on longer distances (unless used on a platform pedal)Does this sound fair?
I have no intent on currently buying more than one shoe/pedal combo, so want to get this right. For that reason I want to use MTB shoes. Also, I don't have the bills to shell out on £180 SIDIs so is the ATAC system compatible with Shimano shoes such as the XC50 as both use 2 bolt cleats?

I have never noticed hotspots or being tiring riding SPDs on 100+ mile plus rides.
Saying that people do say ATACs are better, as long as you don't mind replacing the cleats a lot more often.
-
• #322
I prefer SPDs over ATACs. Their cleats are so fucking durable and you're only likely to pull a foot if you're a wobbly skidder.
SPD-SLs and Speedplay are much of a muchness to me for road use.

If the shoes fit, and the cleat position in an idea position, then generally you shouldn't get hotspot.
pedals I think largely varies on the person, some experiences hotspot with Atac, some with Shimano.
I loved Atac but went for Shimano simply because they're a lots more adjustable than the Atac's cleat.

is there any difference when out of the saddle and pushing hard? (smaller contact area) ?

Yes. Does it matter? Not really.
Hippy: the 'Which?' of the forum ;)
