  • What cleats do they ship with? I am used to 10degree float

  • They ship with grey which I think is something like 5 degrees. The red is 9 if I remember correctly.

  • Yep I'd imagine they'll be fine for me.

My problem with my knees started from riding 500+ miles on an ill fitting bike during 5 days (geared, mashing hills, panniers). The pain is on the outside of my knee which is know is part of the IT band trouble. I always stretch them and use a roller buy fear as soon as I ride the bike I'm back to step one again.

With any luck speedplays will help me out too.

get a proper bike and pedal fitting. Seriously.

Speedplays are great - took me about half a week to get used to them and never looked back since - love the big cleat with a carbon sole, I don't get hotspots anymore and pedaling feels more comfortable. That said, I got Scherrit to set mine up for me, and have been very glad of it since - fit once and forget

I've had a proper bike fit and have been riding without any pain since June time but the pain has now come back, come to think of it this could be down to seatpost movement couldn't it?

Whilst building my new bike I'm going to dial everything in as per the measurements which means hopefully with the speedplays I'll have no trouble what so ever.

  • Move the BB back 2/3cm you mean?
Did you compensate by pushing your saddle forward?

    Longer frame maybe.

Saddle went down and forward. Bars went down.

  • or some nice old touring forks with a 100mm rake (although you would have to knock your barspinz on the head)..

  • No thanks. I want it to handle properly. I'm getting used to it now anyway.

If pain came back, logical thing to do is to speak to the bike fitter about it, and obviously asked him about moving onto speed play.

  • Longer frame maybe.

So with the lower saddle and bars, are there aero advantages to using midfoot?

If so, will this ever be seen in the peloton or more in TTs?

  • Slight, yes.

I think one pro tried it (Rohregger from Milram) and went back. But it's used a lot in TTs already.
Lots of triathletes use it (9 of top 10 Kona) and so do longer TTers - the top two RAAM solo finishers use midfoot.

  • Longer frame maybe.

I was thinking of some way to only moving the BB back if it was custom. Save moving your front end forward. Maybe a slight bent in the seatpost.

  • Not sure how it would affect my pedalling. Longer bike would mean I'm more stretched out for aero loveliness. I can get lower. snaps spine trying new stretches

  • quick poll please:

My girlfriend wants to move to clipless pedals and seems to be set on road pedals (even though I have said that mtb pedals will be fine and easier to use...).

I went straight from mtb to Speedplay's - which are awesome. She can't afford 100 quid for pedals and I don't know anything about budget road pedals.. so recommendations for budget gateway pedals?

Ideally something with a bit float that are easy to get in and out of. The 105's look OK - as do the Keo easy's (but lack of spring adjustment may be an issue)

  • keo's?

  • yeah - are they alright? Float?

  • The shimano PD-R540 are pretty decent, I had 2 pairs before swapping to atacs. Plenty of float and adjustable tension. Cheap as well.

  • I've got a pair of old Look Delta's doing nothing. You could have them for nothing, but you would need to buy some cleats. I don't know how they compare to modern keo's, but could be worth it to see if she gets on with the whole clipless thing.

The float with keo's change with different cleats. They come with grey ones which are medium, 5 degrees or something, I use them and haven't had a problem.

  • Yeah the red cleats offer 9 degree float.

The difference between Keos and Deltas is the weight obviously and I seem to remember that Keos offer better power transfer.

Deltas are still good though and cleats are still readily available.

  • I'd recommend 105's. £33 from Ribble or get Evans to price match. The cleats last a long time and are a lot more walkable than a lot of others

  • I fully agree the 105 SL is a great pedal especially for the money. None of that comedy skidding about walking on shiny floors either

  • keo's?

    Vom.

Do they have to be road pedals? MTB pedals almost always make more sense.

    ATAC or SPD, SPD-SL

  • Listen to Hippo, he's never had a vendetta against any road brands* so his advice it entirely based on facts ;-)

    *Continental, Campagnolo etc.
