  • Drop the OG Beaufort if you're a real player; waxed with a poachers pocket out the back for when you brass up some game. I rock the Sapper which is very much like a military smock, helps keep me smart when on the Officers Mess lawn standing next to a bonfire sipping a port with a tasty bird on my arm. Legit.

Regarding wax, you can drop the 'Dax Wax' style from a tub or liquid 'Silk Oil', which I go for. Saying that, I waxed it three years ago and haven't touched it since.

I think tweed IS going through somewhat of a renaissance phase at the moment. Zara, Topman and the sort all seem to have gone balls deep on it and are putting leather elbow patches on everything at present. The mind boggles why you need elbow patches on a knitted jumper but hey ho, that's One Direction Fashion for you.

If you really want to go ultra balls deep get a Driza-bone.. they fucking stink and would keep you dry even when eye deep in hell in the Somme.

  • Being a long time country sportsman i dont know anyone who wears a Barbour in the field - there are much much better options if you take standing in a field and killing shit seriously - same goes for Hunter.

  • ^ Quite so old boy. Chappy says he's got £100 to spend, why not go for Holland & Holland's bespoke service.

  • Its just a waxed jacket brand. Nothing more.

In the same way Nike make trainers as cheap as possible then sell them as a premuim brand

Barbour do the same with waxed jackets.

Except that the Barbour wax jackets are still made in England.

  • As there seem to be lots of Barbour fan-boys here can someone tell me what the difference is between a Barbour and a Barbour-like waxed cotton jacket?

The reasons I ask, are it's not made out of anything special is it? Like a high quality down, or goretex? In fact my understanding is that it's almost the opposite. So it's not material. Also my mum bought me one 16 years ago, and it still gets used for gardening activities in the winter and is still in one piece...

...so is it just name? or are there really cleaver design features? or lots of options for customisation?

They used to be british made, high quality coats that would last a lifetime, and were far better made, of thicker cotton, with better zips, stitching, poppers, wax, etc than their lookalike rivals. In terms of quality it was night and day.
I suppose nowadays they are owned by some Italian fashion house and thrown together in China. I cannot be arsed to check, just in case I am right.

When I grew up in the country no one would be seen dead in anything other than a Barbour and a pair of hunters, and some horrible green quilted body warmer/gilet thing.

  • Most of the Jackets are made in the UK, but a most of their other stuff is made in China.

Barbour has been fashioned up over recent years, like Belstaff before it - they put out some horific shit now.

You can get much better and cheaper fieldsports jackets from other brands, e.g Musto

  • I've had three Barbours, all of them excellent quality. The newer models don't differ to the older ones in quality assuming you buy the same models.

  • Aye the proper ones aren't bad, just expensive for what they are - it's a shame they have cut down on the range of technical clothing and focusing more on casual wear - the Barbour shop in Chelsea doesnt even stock proper hunting kit any more, just the fashion stuff.

  • Tasty*

    *the jacket, not the geezer

Not wrong, coupla things I would change on it tho'... The collar is a bit shit, could do with being a bit stiffer as it just flops around, I'd also ditch the sleeve stash pocket and make the cuff/elasticated cuffs work a bit better than they do now... They feel a bit bulky and unrefined...

Other than that it's fucking awesome, I wear mine all the time...

  • Also, I've never ridden with a Barbour on. There's a reason that proper cycling jackets don't look anything like Barbours or are made from waxed cotton.

  • It's probably cheaper to get this bicycle and not worry about getting all sweaty...

  • .

Cheers. That's what I was wondering. Now you mention it the poppers on one of my pockets have gone. But I use that one for oversized items.

You can get much better and cheaper fieldsports jackets from other brands, e.g Musto

My ex used to cream herself over Musto stuff. It looked pretty good when I examined hers.

On drysabone a few kids at my school had the full lenth versions and during those rainy periods and floods back at the end of the 90's they rocked. Just hard not to look like a high school killer.

  • It's probably cheaper to get this Land Rover and not worry about getting all sweaty...

    Fixed.
