• Sprocket size doesn't (usually) affect chainline; the chainline will only change if one sprocket is dished (i.e. doesn't sit centrally on its threads) and the other isn't, or if your axle has spacers on one side but not the other (i.e. your hub isn't central in the dropouts - so when you flip the wheel around the hub will 'move' to one side).

    What Sheldon was talking about is axle movement in the dropout - that is, with a variation of three teeth, you'll need 3x3=9mm movement in your dropouts (plus enough room for your axle nuts).
