I thought it was 531sl that was rebranded as 531c?
'Plain' 531 frames often take 26.4 seatposts, whereas 531c always take 27.2 - so, at least some of the time, there is a difference between 531 and 531c in terms of wall thickness. Also, my touring bike has a "531 Renovated" sticker even though it's made from 531ST.
Measuring the seatpost would be the best way of determining what wall thickness/variant of 531 this frame is.
