  • French Touch has beaten me to it. A fixie skidder's attire is almost impossible to separate on and off the bike and blends in

Oh, I don't know--just look at this fixie-skidder. He should clearly have been wearing blue to blend in.

I don't think I was clear enough; I was talking about buying flashy bikes that are a little too much for purpose. That is what helps keep the interest in theft.
Expensive bikes obviously get nicked, too, and probably yield a fair profit, especially when broken up into parts, but Amsterdam, where a different sort of bike is prevalent, has sky-high rates of bike theft, too. Where there's a legitimate commercial activity, there's a criminal market waiting to develop. With more cycling comes more cycle-related crime, sad to say. Perverse as that sounds, it's actually a symptom of success--which obviously still means that something needs to be done about it.

  • Only just learnt that there were no cyclists killed last year in Paris.

So it is possible to have a city that doesn't maim cyclists for the sake of being able to use lots of vehicles in London.

  • I think we can all keep this civil, can't we? There's a difference between heated debate and throwing personal insults around.
    thank you!

  • Only just learnt that there were no cyclists killed last year in Paris.

That's cos French LGVs are on blockade all year round.

  • What needed to be done is for driving instructor to stress the important of leaving cyclists enough room when overtaking.

And then the driving instructor will able to pass it onto future generation of drivers, best way to get them to understand.

    Or just rerun this;

Steer Clear of Bikes - YouTube

Great ad! Love the bronze Viva. And the girl with the long white socks. Them were the days.

  • There is a good chance this has been mentioned before, but the footdown blog looks at the campaign in an interesting way - http://www.thefootdown.co.uk/2012/02/02/thoughts-on-the-cities-safe-for-cycling-manifesto/

  • People in Japan sometimes don't lock their bikes, or use very light, easily breakable locks.

The difference being that in Japan a symbol of ownership is usually enough to deter thieves, but in the UK you must physically stop people being able to take your bike away.

Regarding Japan, my friend once left an expensive camera by a fountain my mistake. His Japanese girlfriend said don't worry it will be there tomorrow. And sure enough it was! No one had touched it. Amazing! Would be nice if things were like that here.

Painting the side of a road red and calling it a cycle lane is all good until it’s full of parked cars resulting in us swerving in and out of them pissing off drivers and making them angry enough to run us down.

I wish I had an expensive camera and/or japanese girlfriend

  • and a fountain

  • You think people look at hipsters riding along and think "oh, they're cool" ?

    Ahahahahahahahah!!

    Where did I say that?

    I didn't.

But I should have. Hipsters are cool as fuck. Work the beard, one day it could be you.

With a large mafia organisation controlling all crime?

    Sounds good to me.

Blends in with? A bunch of fakengers wearing cycling caps and shoes with street wear ?
People can take their helmets and jackets off you know. And I think when they are off the bike, they do.

Unlike your skixie fiddlers who prance about with courier bags and silly caps even when they haven't been near a bike in months. I've been to east London, I know what I saw.

Yes, yes, that'll be it; nothing to do with the social stigma of being labelled a petty thief, no instead it is a large organised crime syndicate that even controls petty theft.

My my you do like to generalise don't you. shakes head.

  • You're such a biter

  • Again with personal insults?

  • He meant that you got reeled in by his trolling ability.

  • Only just learnt that there were no cyclists killed last year in Paris.

So it is possible to have a city that doesn't maim cyclists for the sake of being able to use lots of vehicles in London.

But in January one cyclist was killed by an HGV and one pedestrian died after being hit by a cyclist.

Hurting because he rode to work in fluoro this morning and doesn't like being called a melt type post IMO.

  • And what if I did? Can you explain how this makes you a superior cyclist because you don't wear fluoro?
I've seen terrible cycling from people wearing all kinds of clothing and riding all kinds of bike, I'm just interested to know what makes you so brilliant.

  • @snowy_again, bang to rights.
