Campagnolo Shamal Servicing

Posted on
  • Just received a pair of very nice 90s Campagnolo Shamals. I'm keen to get them serviced, new bearings, trued etc. I know they aren't as straightforward as some wheels as the nipples are inside the rim, I have no idea about bearings and whether they are a straightforward swap in from parts most bike shops would have in stock, or not.

Can anyone recommend somewhere or give me some advice?

    Thanks in advance.

  • I'd like this answered too.

  • I'd like this answered too.

Dunno about spokes, but as far as I'm aware the hubs are standard Record for the era (with fewer drillings obv). Should be a grease port on the front hub too.

  • Thanks for the info, though that thread has confirmed my attitude that I want someone else to do it!

I'm going to phone around a few shops and ask.

  • Change of plans....

So, I spoke to Condor who can do this, but they would charge £50 for truing, can do the hub service, but don't have the freehub body. So, I have taken it upon me to do it all myself.

I've figured out that I need 7/32" and 1/4" bearings. (I got some top notch grade 10) and a 5.5mm socket wrench (to replace the UT-HU070 Campag tool for spoke tensioning.)

I will let you know how I get on.

  • ive just converted a pair of 8speed shamals to take a 10speed shimano cassette.
+trued them and serviced the hubs.
note- the the 5.5mm socket wrench you need has VERY THIN walls , the only one i could find hat would work was the campagnolo one ( was able to borrow it from LBS ).

also there are two races of loose bearings which rely on only one movable cone for adjustment, so remember to do this before the NDS axle bolt ( the one with the grub screw ).
    good luck!

  • pat, which freehub converter did you use?

  • one straight from campagnolo. got it through the LBS ( not my normal store , i study 10months a year in another city.) it came with no box / just in a greasy campagnolo bag. and i didnt really talk to the guy, but he said the supplier didnt have it as stock. i THINK its a modern (still in production) one. made for converting their newer wheels. ( as the spacing on the axle is different in new campy hubs vs old ones..
    it cost NZD$150.
i also had to make up a little spacer to make it sit properly on the axle , this was possible using a spacer found in the existing campy freehub and a flat file. pics of whole process in below links, pm if you need help.

    Hi

I don't remember being asked for such job recently, and £50.00 is way too much even if I would include a full hub service. The only reason to justify this, is if I had to completely rebuild the wheel, however, the spokes are hard to find and I don't have a whole set.
Those wheels were native with 8 speed (if I guessed your model), and I do have the original spare ones.
I do have also the Shimano (HG9/10) freehub for old Campagnolo hubs, but they would need to make a custom spacer between axle and freehub

I promise I spoke to someone on the phone, and they genuinely quoted 50 notes. I'm still going to have a go myself, but will pm you if I need to bring them in. Thanks for your response.

this is what i got, i simply made the spacer he is talking about by cutting down the bearing spacer already in the existing ( campagnolo splined, and not being used ) freehub body as per pic's.

+1 to andreagattonero for a response like that. obviously a bit easier to get hold of the thing than my lbs implied!
    good luck
