• Can't help with the bars I'm afraid but would a nice set of gum wall tyres complement the classic look, and possibly even help to highlight those lovely gold panels?

Thanks everyone for the comments/advice. Will probably go for black tyres though, GP4000S being the front runner at the mo as I can get those in 25c.

    I really like the Serotta.

Thanks. So do I. It's rides like a dream.

I disagree with ever change made to it, but it's still a lovely bike.

TBH it was beautiful as it was, but it was sort of built with whatever I had handy at the time (buying the frame wiped out any funds) and although I love that DA chainset and the SRAM running gear I just felt that it was a bit too random. I had a health scare last year which lasted a few months and for a while didn't think I'd see the day out let alone ride again. So I sold a lot of my racing bits as I've decided it wasn't good for someone with a suspect heart. I also sold the Reynolds wheels at that time. Back to health now but spent way too long sat on the sofa pondering what to do with this bike. Just decided to give it a make over (or under depending on your view) as it needed new wheels anyway. I wanted to set it up more for long enjoyable rides rather than short sharp fast ones.

If we are talking about the serotta then I think the new group set will deff look better not sure about the rest especially the brooks

Must admit of all the stuff I've got for it, the Brooks is still main question mark for me. It does look a bit clumsy, but I'm going to wait to see how it all looks once finished.

Damo - I am glad to see that the X2 has gone to a very good home :)

8-) I actually bought it for my touring bike as I need a 100mm for that, but ideally a 90mm for this, but put it on to see how it looked. Did you find the wheels you were after?

If you want a shorter reach I'd look at some compact ones. They don't look fugly and although they're not classic classic, they're more classicly shaped than ergos. 3t's Ergonova are popular, and for a less nodder-like reach there's the Ergosum ;)

Also you might well be able to find round bars with a shorter reach. I half remember zipp's classic round bars having a shortish reach... but I might be imagining it. Have a look here: http://ruedatropical.com/2009/03/road-drop-bar-geometry/

I know you didn't ask for styling points, but asides from the wheels and cranks, I'd switch all the silver and white bits and bobs for black.

That's just what I needed. Thank you. Great link too. I think the Ergosum or similar is exactly what I need. Don't want to go "classic classic" as you say, afterall it's got carbon rims and an 11 speed group, but I want it to look like a modern steel race bike, not a wind tunnel derived carbon fest. Once built I intend to try it with black post and stem as well as silver. I'll post both so you can have a looksie.
