Went to the physio at St Thomas's today, turns out the pain's coming from a trapped nerve... She's given me a few new stretching exercises which should speed up the heeling... Jeez, it fucking hurts... :S

That's good news. Having a diagnosis means you can start trying to cure the problem. Hope the pain diminishes quickly.

I am completely crap when it comes to stretching/generally warming up before riding (or ever for that matter). Are there any good books/DVDs/websites that anyone can recommend for that sort of thing? opens new tab for yoga DVDs

Warming up before ride = ride a bit slower at the start of your ride. That's it.
Afterwards you might want to do some stretching. Lookup hamstring, glute, calf, shoulder, back stuff. There's lots of stuff on here already. Bill posted a link ages ago to cycle-specific yoghurt.. yoga.

I've started trying a bit of massage on my legs before/during/after long rides. Much less muscle ache the day after. Plus shiny legs are PRO.

So, a dredge.
Very recently, I have experienced a rather strange kind of pain in my upper thigh - more specifically, my left leg, and what upon googling would appear to be in the region of the head of my femur.
It doesn't feel like a muscle pain; as it tends to throb at strange times completely unrelated to any movement. In fact, I've only ever experienced it lying or sitting down, effectively motionless. It seems to come and go at random, with painful throbbings in two or three short waves, i.e. there will be three short sharp pains in the area which then go away, only to come back again a couple of minutes later. It's happening right now...
tbh, I'm not even sure it's cycling related - I've done little mileage recently, and nothing too tough at that. I have recently geared down too, which I guess could be related.
I suspect it may be a nerve of some sort - although it doesn't seem debilitating/painful enough for that given what I've heard. Although it is painful enough to make me draw breath and stop talking when it happens...
Has anyone else had anything like this? I'm thinking Dr's appointment in the new year anyway, cos it's irrtiating. But would be nice to hear other femur-pain related speculation.

That area is too complex for forum speculation. Could be nerve damage, could be bursitis, Arthritis, etc etc.
Get a referal made from GP to physio. Good luck!

True. But has never stopped speculation before. I just wanted company...

I think a UFO has got caught in your leg during a hyperjump.

I do not like the sound of [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trochanteric_bursitis"]Greater trochanteric pain syndrome, [/ame]which seems quite close. But I will not worry myself (or speculate further...) until I have seen a professional. I'm too young for this stuff! :(
Thanks for the advice.

Ooooh fick. face up to facts. There is no substitute for internet-based medical diagnosis by strangers. Get the Black and Decker out immediately and have the bistard off at the stump. There really is no time to waste; tonight you may sleep, on the morrow you may not wake.

That would be great. I love sleep.

Wikipedia based medical diagnosis = bad idea. I once, in a sleep deprived state, convinced myself I had ME. It turned out I just needed to catch up on my sleep, stop being dehydrated and eat some proper food...

^tactical quote! I haven't diagnosed anything, especially not off the interwebz. Happened again today though, it was shit. I'll get to a GP soonish methinks, or at least hold off until the ''wait until it goes away" pills stop working.

Oh I wasn't saying you were, it was more a warning of reading about diseases on Wikipedia!

I have a question regarding arm pain.
Guy at work used to ride in. He cycles from hackney up muswell hill on a geared bike with flat handlebars.
he developed muscular pain in his right elbow on the outside of his arm. he thought it was from picking up his son. he bought a specialists elbow support but he says its not getting better and his left arm has developed the pain too.
he doesnt want to keep cycling until it clears.my suggestion that it was cycling related and the it might improve if he switched to drop bars with hoods to change the angle of his elbow.
anyone got any information or experience with cycling causing arm pain?
That's what I thought. Funny names but nice to look at.
Even more happy that that stuff actually helps.
