If you want to try a custom ROM then don't worry too much about resetting it back to default afterwards. You can download the carrier branded firmware your phone came with from a thread on XDA-Developers here:
There is a counter on the phone which will show up that you've flashed a ROM on there but it's very unlikely that o2 will notice it. If you're worried then you can reset the counter using a USB Jig:
