I went to see 'The Artist'......First the lighting and cinematography (and set/prop design to a lesser degree, for me at least) were excellent. They really helped place the piece in time, some of the shots and camera angles used were so timeless, they made it for me.
Working in the industry as I do I've read quite a bit about the camera and lighting work on this. It is fascinating to say the least. They really did the whole thing old school shooting it all on black and white film.. (Yes film. Not digital.) using a grey pallet for light and shade rather than the "black and white" you see on something like Raging Bull. The DOP also used the same lighting from the silent era using only one or two proper old fashion lamps rather than big grids and banks. Also shot at 27 frames per second giving the actors that slightly speeded effect.. Could go on... And on... And on...
