What chain ring size?

  • ok i'm thinking of doing a couple of velo cycling nights, the thing is they let you in with gears for a couple of goes, then after a certain point in the year you have to use single speed, so i may be looking for a single speed frame and setup, but not sure on gearing, i guess as i'm on the burly side i'll need a nice strong chainset , prefer complete bikesetup but can get frame and progress from there..

    anyway ideas ?

  • Probably a medium.

  • Or large

  • Maybe a long-medium, as a compromise?

  • massive

  • ^ all hilarious but I seriously suggest 48-52 "keep it on the big ring y'all"

  • chuckle not the best at explaining am i.. ok so 48-52 that's the frint end done what about the rear ? for MTB i've used a 32/16 as a norm but for road i have no idea, and especially as it's a velo track, i think the target is around 20mph + so from 20 up to i guess 30 tops (that's what i can get up to with a gear'd bike) along a flat.

i'm not a huge spinner but average so guessing 70-90 rpm's....

then the next thing is what type of frame to go for, i think i sit around a 56cm frame, options steel /alu / carbon / tit ?

  • if your riding to the track (which i presuming you are) and aiming for 20-30mph, I'd say you should use a 48-17 gearing, i use that everyday its not spiny and it will achieve the speeds your after. gear ratios totally change when it comes to wheel sizes (say from 26" to 700c) so i understand your pain haha.
in terms of frame, an alloy frame prehaps it really depends on how much you want to spend. track frames are more upright than a road frame so you should take that into consideration

  • ^yeah, do that. Then sit down quietly somewhere, and think about what happened.
