  • Ran with a friend today who told me how he ran the 'last' 40km of the Comrades Ultra Marathon in South Africa using suppositories.

What the fuck was he shoving stuff up his ass for?

  • What the fuck was he shoving stuff up his ass for?

He picked up an injury in the first half and didn't want to quit...so his dad (joys of having an ultra marathon addict father) had some vaseline and suppositories for him at the 48km mark. He told me that 15 minutes later he had to keep checking down to see if he still had feet.
To me it seems as if he had not done the proper training for such a race and put his body through unnecessary pain/stress.

  • sacked off my long run this week, new puppy meant i was up lots through the night and frankly i didn't feel like it.

still hit my weekly mileage target as i went out for a gentle 4 miles, so not even slightly nervous, and it's probably done me good.

  • played the second half yesterday, i am really feeling the benefits of the running. felt a lot more mobile.

  • ^^Bizarre - never heard of ultrarunners using suppositories before - seems like a recipe for Radcliffe/Renton moments.

Anyway, Southern XC champs yesterday, horribly hilly 15km course down in Brighton. Felt awful for the first couple of laps, then was flying on the last, passed 30-40 people - could've done with another 10k for me.

  • Tried to go for a run this morning but lusted just about 3km before my knee was really throbbing. Think im gonna rest up for a couple of weeks. Perhaps to a little bit of swimming.

  • more quitting going on here than anything
anyway the Braunton 10 was coldbut dry, lovely circuit-hilly and at 4 and 6 a bit to get stuck into. paced well so started to reach out a bit at mile 7 after a mdma jelly baby that helped. then at 8 there was a guy with flouro gloves on and i thought theres no way im letting a club nodder beat me so dug in. last 2 are down hillish on this so flowed round with doug lazy in my head and felt like top of my head had been lifted off.time-71.30 stoked.

  • Cut short a run yesterday, but that's because I realised it was just too cold for barefoot running and I left the Vibrams at the office. Not getting any warmer this coming week, either.

  • 10km Mountain run last night. Cold crisp air, and a relatively clear trail. Came around a corner and hit a massive patch of ice. both legs bent outwards at the knees a la Bambi. This bloody hurt, so I lost concentration and went over the edge of the path. Did'nt fall far (1m?), but I landed in a pile of rocks. Smashed the bracket of my headlight, and bruised everything. Jogged the 4km remaining km home, with sore knees and a pathetic dangly light. Feel shite today.

TBH I've been tempting fate with these runs anyway, and it could have bee soooo much worse.

Cute what is it? Is that your new Cani-cross partner?

Back to back marathons this weekend including 20k in the dark, my first ever proper night time trail run. Lots of lessons learned (like carrying 2 spare torch batteries isn't ideal when it actually takes 3) and a little slower than I'd have liked but no deterioration in the foot which is a big plus.

A good tip is to wear a peaked cap. At night you can rarely spot small branches before its too late. With a cap you can quickly nod your head, and aviod getting poked in the eye.

    .

Yep, picked her up on saturday morning we've been running round the garden ever since!

Not sure about the 1am,3am and 5am toilet breaks but apparently she'll get better with a bit of time!

  • I did my standard 3.5 mile loop last night, was concerned I was going to blow up halfway round and throttled back a lot, by the time I was coming up to the last left turn I was back to feeling like I had some pace in my legs again, which was nice- bit of an up and down run.

Second of the year, and so far the foot is allowing me to run, so all good.

I am personally convinced that running gives my cycling a big boost, we shall see how it impacts my (bike) training this week.

I'm planning on lots of heavy resistance work for my legs in the gym, 3 minute power intervals on the turbo, mixed up with some 5k runs and 2 hour Z2 sessions on the bike- probably 2 degree circuits of Richmond Park.

  • On the topic of night running I've spent the morning thinking about head torches. My current light is an old Petzel TIKKA XP (looks like this one) but I've had it longer than I can remember and I'm sure there must have been tremendous improvements in the meantime.

My main difficulty running in the dark last night was that the ground in front of me was reasonably illuminated (as in I could differentiate the mud path from the grass verges) but I found it very difficult to identify the texture of the ground underfoot forcing me to run much more gingerly - over large sections I felt at severe risk of turning my ankle. I'm not sure if this is an issue common to all head torches but I suspect that I just need a brighter light. Another problem was that beyond my relatively limited circle of vision I was almost completely blind - I knew last nights trails like the back of my hand but following unknown trails would have been almost impossible. So what I think I need is MOAR POWER!

The Lenser H7, Petzl Myo, Petzl Ultra, and Alpkit Gamma all seem to get good reviews but with quite a wide range of specs and prices. Does the forum have any recommendations for good quality head torches for night running?

The criteria that seem important are (in no particular order): Brightness (brighter the better, but no idea how bright is bright enough?), Battery life (I'm expecting a minimum of 11 hours in the dark), ease of changing batteries (it seems unlikely that I'll get both sufficient brightness and runtime in one go so I'll probably have to change batteries at some point), regulated output (slowly diminishing brightness doesn't appeal), lightness (I don't like wearing a head torch at the best of times...), cost (I'm a PhD student so while I want/need something that will do a good job, it's not like I have money to burn...).

Maybe this is more relevant for the "lights" thread but since I'm after a running specific light I thought here would be better.

I have had the Lenser H7, and really rate it. The batteries last ages, and are changed by simply peeling back the rubber cover on the back unit. I've used it in monsoon like rain storms, and down to -15C, without issue. The light is both powerful, and well spread. With an intense centre spot for terrain detail, and some spread for obstacle spotting. I find it sits nicely, and the angle of the lamp is easy to adjust while running, as is the stepless power setting.

I shall be replacing my injured H7, with another H7 shortly.

definitely, when I was in marathon shape last year I was climbing a lot more easily on my mountain bike, now I'm struggling to get 15 miles a week in running I'm finding I can't go uphill as fast or recover as quickly.

  • Started off on 3 x 2 intervals on Saturday - 500m in the second lap, and decided to jack it in an walk home.

I am just not feeling it any more, and feeling really down about running.

That was my feeling halfway round my loop last night- made myself go on, just slowed down and focused on the scenary.

Maybe stop pushing yourself for a week or so, just go out and run for it's own sake, then introduce the training aspect when you've begun to enjoy it again?

I run with a Myo XP (2004/5 model) and it's never let me down. It's got a really good focussed beam - good for about 70 metres - and a diffuser for less open environments. Battery life is good and it has a bettey condition monitor that gives plenty of warning for battery changes. I've used it for night-time fell races in forested areas and local running in woodland and open fields when it can be difficult to stay on course for the next stile / gate. I've also used it strapped to my helmet for mountain biking to supplement the light attached to my bars but have moved on to some Silva lights for that now.

  • Tiswas. Intervals are fecking shite. Everyone hates them. I'll be doing them soon to gain some sort of speed for rugby. Nasty.

Go for an untimed longer run, and give yourself a break from the intensive shit.

  • I haven't actually read this blog post in a while but IIRC I really like the "run for fun" message behind it. Logging the long miles or the fast sprints is all well and good if you have a specific goal but ultimately its just more enjoyable if you stay slightly within yourself and enjoy the experience.

  • Tiswas, its all about variation, doinbg the same or similar things all the time leads to complacency then boredom, I found that a couple of weeks ago, so took a less structured view of running last week and swapped my 14 mile long run for a gentle 2 miles, I now can't wait for this weeks runs and I'm even looking forward to my long run, as I'm going to have to find a new route in order to run this distance.

Also intervals suck (they are effective) but I find it too much concentration to handle, try something really mind numbing like hill reps, or some form of cross training, I did yoga last week and loved it, prob won't go again for a while as its pricey for an hours exercise, alternatively loads of clubs train at battersea park running track you could go along and join in with a session there as everyone knows misery loves company!
