They used to have a holdall that sat on the rear rack, with a metal C shaped bracket on the base front and rear. It slotted into the frontmost cross member of the rack and the back was held in place by opening and closeing, onto the metal bracket, the spring loaded clamp you mention. You can just about make it out in this photo
