Hey, only just found out about this group / site / forum and thought it would be useful to sign up.
Been regularly cycling in London for 5 or 6 years now - do 20 miles a day during the working week and maybe another 30 or so at the weekend depending what I've got on. I basically started cycling as a tube avoidance measure and grew to love it. I'm generally a strong cyclist with (I feel) excellent road awareness, but have never ridden fixed gear before. I currently ride one of these.
I've been thinking about trying a fixed gear / single speed for a year or so and, after being given some money over the festive period and not knowing what to spend it on, I've decided to dip my toe by buying a cheap off-the-peg bike - it's the sort of bike I imagine 90% of you would turn your noses up at but I think it's probably the best setup to learn on... I'm not exactly short of cash, so if it works out I can get a better set up in a year or two, right?
Anyway, the bike should be with me in a week or so and I can't wait! What tips do you have for an absolute beginner?

The London BMX Forum needs you to help spread BMX across the capital.
5 new BMX clubs across east London have got together to form the London BMX Forum – a group that meets every couple of months to plan how to develop BMX in London.
We are calling on all BMXers in and around London to step forward and contribute their BMX experience to their local club.
Each club needs as many experienced BMXers as possible, whether it is helping with coaching, equipment or even just demoing skills to the newcomers.
Going into 2012, we will be involved in national, regional and local competitions, setting up new club sessions and in February we will host the BMX Roadshow in partnership with Chain Reaction Cycles. [www.accesssport.org.uk/BMXRoadshow]
Drop us a line, drop in to any club session or come along to the Roadshow in February to find out more.
Find your local club here [www.accesssport.org.uk/bmxlegacy]
Contact: bmxforum@googlegroups.com
Do bmxer's join clubs? I thought they were called 'gangs' or 'crews'

Welcome.
There's a thread dedicated to OTP (off-the-peg) single speeds and fixed wheel bicycles.
It's likely that many of your questions have been answered multiple times - The search function is an invaluable tool - There's a wealth of accumulated experience and knowledge that you can benefit from.
Thanks Tiswas - good to be here - it looks like it's going to be a useful resource.

Many on here ride OTPs, me included. You'll soon want to swap out a good number of parts, but a lot of the frames at least are good value for money. Just don't go for the ultra-cheap end of the range, e.g. Creates, but you've probably already seen how strongly the forum advises against them.

Hello friends!
I live in the US. I stumbled upon this awesome site today and had to join.
I'm a single speed coaster brake kinda guy, which is hard to find these days over here.
There appears to be loads of info and knowledgeable people on here, so hopefully I'll fit in haha. -

Good Morning fellow cyclists ! .Complete novice to this forum malarkey and new member . My name is Oz and come from deepest darkest Kent, living on the edge of the Ashdown Forest i am tired of" visions from hell" in lycra and having to continually explain the joys of singlespeed and steel so thought would attempt to converse with likeminded individuals.

Hi All
New member to what seems a very friendly forum. I like the sense of humour and the non patronising attitude so often found in other forums. I am (shall we say) a more mature member but hey, still have the legs to pedal.

gday mate
Hello,
I'm new here and my bike has 6 gears. Is this allowed? It also has brakes. But......NO MUDGUARD. Is this a redeeming quality?
