It was the number of high rep people that nerged him that added up.
The system is weird/complex. If you have good rep and long-standing, then you effectively have more 'rep power'... you can influence someone else's rep in a bigger way.
If a lot of people with high rep power nerg, then it is a multiplier. So basically ed nuked himself.
