^Actually, thats not strictly true, the civil case is totally different to the criminal one, and speaking to a solicitor isn't speaking to either party, its a party employed by one of the parties, which is slightly different.
You can do a lot to help without speaking to them, if you really object to that. You could let the police pass your statement to them onwards, which is a huge help. It really really does make a difference.
