  • I have a feeling GPSBabel can do it.

  • I've been using my base 800 edge for road - maps pretty crap but OK.

Now want to use for mtb and off road. Which is the best OSM link for off road maps of the UK which will allow turn by turn directions etc.

  • Mapsource has a filter option for track points, I have mine set at 500 i.e. the maximum for a track

Ah.. does that do what I'm after? Sounds promising. Thanks.

  • thanks!

  • Help!

Downloaded the GB map from openmtbmap. Also downloaded the QLandkarteGT program that's supposed to view it.

Now I just have a bunch of files that do nothing............. what am I supposed to do next?

  • If you are using windows as an operating system you should have downloaded an executable file called
    mtbgreat _britain.exe.
Run the file to install and register the maps.
Here is a direct link to the file
    ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/misc/openstreetmap/openmtbmap/mtbgreat_britain.exe

  • I've just noticed one of the bevels (?) on the back of my 500 is busted (the bits which lock it into place in the 1/4 twist mount)

Has this happened to anyone? Has anyone sent their's back for repair?

It seems to sit ok in the mount but I'm worried it could pop out..

  • Spoke to Garmin.. they can't repair but they will replace it for £68.. Not bad deal really, Had it a couple of years.. It's just I'll be lost with out it..

Not literally lost. I don't use it to navigate.

Good to know they where so cool about taking it back.

I have heard a few people have had Issues with the rubber buttons on the side.

  • I was well surprised actually.. When he said they don't repair I was ready to deal with the "to bad, you'll just have to buy another " attitude... But then he just piped up and told me about the replacement policy..

  • did you buy in it directly from Garmin ?

  • Nope.. Guess it's just pretty good support. I would have been fucked off it I had to buy a new one just because the bevel had broken. It works perfectly. They must acknowledge it could be a problem.

Mind you I guess they're still making a profit on a replacement.

  • I think I'm going to buy a Garmin next week - sick of faffing around with gps tracking on my blackberry and my Polar computer is fiddly and irritating. I've pretty much ruled out the 500 as I don't really see the point forking out if it doesn't have maps... so questions are:

    a) 705 or 800? Is the 800 significantly better?

    b) maps etc? Should I bother paying for these or are there backdoor alternatives? I'm a Mac user if that makes any difference..

    Thanks in advance.

  • I've got a 705, I paid £150 for it second hand, it navigates for me extremely well.

I loaded on the Open Street Maps rather than purchasing the Garmin ones, and they work (so far) perfectly.

That said, I have issues with exporting routes from the Garmin Connect service onto the device once I have edited them which drive me flat out bat-shit insane.

I don't know, but I suspect, that this is a Garmin Connect issue however.

I would like to try the 800.

  • thanks - thats great.

Neil, do you find the click stick on the 705 a pain in the arse? Touch screen of the 800 sounds quite appealing, though I'm not sure if its a '£100 more' kind of appealing..

  • s'got no stuff though.. I need* the stuff

  • I've got stuff coming out of my ears.

The 800 is significantly better. The OS maps are great, and the touchscreen is all very nice, but the real advantage is that 800's can do true turn by turn navigation if you use .tcx files. Which in English means it is a hell of a lot more reliable. I didn't actually know this when I bought it, now I'm really glad i got an 800.

If your primary purpose in buying a Garmin is navigation, get an 800.

There are backdoor alternatives to getting the OS maps, yes.

    i concur with the above.

    the 800 is mint.

  • It's the best. If you can afford it why buy old tech?

  • because it's a 100 quid difference that I can spend on things like rent and bills.

Seems the consensus is 800 though (except scarlett - who perceives everything)
