I might also bump my current tyres up to 32c marathon pluses and switch to a smaller inner ring, maybe something in the 32t mark

Very very heavy tyres, if you're intending to use it as an everyday bike, I'd suggested a lighter 32c tyres and keep the Marathon Plus till you need it.
