Oh, and if you do a sweet job of the harlequin it's worth putting some shellac over it to seal it as it tends to curl on the edges after a while. It also soaks up sweat and gets grubby quick.
I wouldn't bother trying to put it over cork(didn't notice that in your first post) as you might rip the cork while stretching the cloth tape tight. I've seen harlequin done with cork but it doesn't look as good.
There's a reason people don't use cloth much nowadays, it doesn't provide much cusioning so def wear gloves on long rides. You'll end up with epic blisters and hands like a docker after a while otherwise. for pre-70's rides it's the only choice tho ;)
