Well under 300 miles through the winter and my rear hub sounds bad!! May have to take it apart and regrease it. Plus I think the crank sounds abit off also.
Love the bike but the weather has played its part!

I think I have finally decided that riding a 56cm langster at the height of 168cm is ridiculous. So I want another langster!! Looking at the steel version but can't really decide if I want the 49 or 52. Tested on the 49cm, looks small and feels small, and not as easy to control. 52cm feels a little too big for my liking, plus I do have a 52cm track bike which to be honest, is a little on the big side... I know what the sizing guide says, but in reality, things don't seem quite straight forward... So what do people think?

I'd tend to go smaller as imo if there's not much in it enlarging a frame is easier than shrinking it.
Also (you don't have to answer here btw), if you're being really honest, is there a part of you that just doesn't want to buy the 'really small bike'? If so, it's not really a sensible reason.

is to a excel file download for a bike fit calculator. Get a friend to help measure you, enter the details and then compare with the geometry table of the langster.
Base your decision on that. Rather than our guess work - we can't see you :)
It is highly likely that you will have to change the stem. If you're using drops then some compact bars might be a good idea given your height. The bottom of the range FSA ones are cheap and work well enough for me.
Also I'd consider the alu langster (for lots of reasons), but mainly in your case, because it's got compact geometry, so the standover height will be easier and it should give you slightly more range.
EDIT: the new one doesn't really look compact geo; and the top tube measurements on the steel are:
49 = ~52mm
52 = ~54mmIf you have stopped growing, and don't want to check for yourself on the bikefit calc, then buy the 49cm one.

Thanks, I don't mind going for smaller, but like I said, I have tested the 49 and while the stand over height seems ok, I found it harder to control. But to be honest, it was 2 years ago and I hadnt been cycling in London for that long then. I don't rally nan get another au, simply because I have got one already, I know it a totally wrong size for me, but still, I want the steel one this time. But thanks for the info, maybe I'll get Evans to get both sizes in and text them again. I think they still run that policy where you can pay a small deposit to gt any bike in for a test and have the money back if you don't want to buy it?
The only problem I have found with my current langster is that it hasn't got a very good clearance at the back for fatter tyre, mainly because of the brake bridge stopping fatter tyre to be put in. I hae got a 25c at the moment and the wheel is at the absolutely far back position, is that the same for the steel one?
Cheers

And yes, I have stopped growing a long time ago... :-(

Is your plan to get a road SS bike and make the mercury a pure track bike? I would do that if I were you, no point having 2 SS bikes for the road imho.
-
• #944
The mercury is for look not use.

• #945
exactly my point...

Hello all
I want to put some mudguards on my langster, i know it's possible, have got some crud road racers after a bit of googling...any one got experience of it? have to have slimmish tyres natch, 23... -
• #947
it's fine, I have been using this type of mudguard for a few years now, it's ok. The only slight problem is because it's out on with 2 rubber band thing, it does go out of place every now and then, but it never bothers me even the slightest. I only use the one for the back, don't see the point of having one for the front wheel too.

^ because it stops your feet getting soaked and filthy. It's probably more use than the rear one.

Decent bike for the price. Nothing more nothing less.

That's the job of over shoes in my opinion. As for the rear one, it's to stop the rider from having a wet bum and most importantly, give a little consideration to the cyclist behind you.
I rode my 2011 Steel at the track this year and there are no clearance issues. There was a guy who pitched up on the alu version occasionally as well.
