TBH I've often thought that because of the natural flow up and to the left (when looking from the bike) it actually makes more sense for the front calliper to go to the left lever:
....and vice versa. Especially on smaller frames.
In fact my Giant was set up like that when I bought it. But the problem is you need to get used to it, and it (to me) seems preferable to just go with what you know.
