As a side effect of me trying to fix this at my end (and failing for those who are affected by it), I have managed to make a few things faster.
SSL is faster after the first request.
Anything cached (stylesheets, etc) are now much faster out of my system.
The result according to the stats this morning is about 15% speed improvement on average for those on SSL, and about 10% improvement for those on http://
Lovely side effects.
