I lost or broke a cleat bolt for the first time last week. I only now realise that the warning signs had been there for ages--the cleat didn't disengage easily. I was just doing a cool fixie circle waiting for a friend to catch up and wanted to gently stop and put my foot on the kerb when I couldn't get my foot out of the pedal and was too unbalanced to try the other one. Cue a very slow and very gentle stack sideways into the carriageway on the quiet side street we were on. No damage done, especially no nasty lingering injury, except a reminder of how useless I am when it comes to mechanical things. A new cleat has already been fitted and normal service has been resumed.
