• Does anyone know if you can tension, or tighten the clip in on an eggbeater? as mine feel like they have become looser over time.

  • as far as I'm aware there is no tensioner in crank brothers pedals, the looseness, and movement will be from the wear on the cleat, you'll just need to buy some more...
    chainreaction and wiggle do them..
crank brothers cleats do seem to wear quite quickly though...

    +1
new cleat. They wear quickly because they are soft to prevent wear to the pedal.

They do a harder cleat, which costs a bit more, if want them to last longer.

  • thankyou chaps.

  • My cleats lasted for around 4000 miles

  • May be of interest to you? I picked these, a pair of eggbeater MTB pedals last week on Ebay, brand new £16 plus postage, came with cleats. the guy had 5 pairs for sale at the time. Item No: 180315911718.

  • just to add that the premium version of the eggbeater cleats last significantly longer than the regular version. while there is a bit of a price difference, i think the premium cleats are definitely worth it.

  • Looking to replace my eggbeater pedals with something more secure (and cleats that last longer than 2 months) for my fixie. I am currently using the Crank Bros short spindles on the eggbeaters as I have a narrower stance and dodgy knees. I have heard good things about the Time Atacs, but unsure if they will be narrow enough for me. I know that Shimano XT SPDs have lateral adjustments in the cleats, but are there any other alternative narrow clipless pedals? Any advice and experiences appreciated - thanks

  • Cleats that last longer than 2 months? My first set of Eggbeater cleats lasted me around 4 years and now on second set which I have had for over a year.

Guess I must be light on my feet :-)

  • Hi

I use two pairs of Crank Brothers Egg Beater pedal for my regular commute to work. They have been used for over five years, but until recently I they have perfect for commuting. They have been serviced and rebuilt in my LBS when they needed to be, but in the last few months I keep coming unclipped, usually when hill climbing on my single speed. I have changed the cleats and changed back to my last remaing old style solid brass ones, all to no avail. I have used the same shoes for some time, so I am assuming I don't need t use the plastic shims.

As you can imagine coming unclipped whilst hill climbing on a single-speed is not fun. I love the look of the older style Egg Beaters, so I am keen not to have to throw away the "classic" looking ones, but equally I realise that nothing last for ever. Has any body else experienced this? I was wondering if it might have something to do with the new cleats which look less robust than the earlier ones.

    Any thoughts and advice welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

    Murray

  • it could be that the bars that hold onto the cleat have worn, and might have become slightly rounded... have you tried the cleats on a newer set of crank bros pedals? and in all honesty i never found eggbeaters to have the same level of hold s time, or shimano...

  • ^^I've found eggbeaters lose their strength after a while - the springs seem to just get weak. I used to like them but the tendency to unclip eventually got on my tits. That's why I changed to SPD's - at least you can tighten them up.

  • if your egg beater is five years old, time to change them especially if they lose their strength (as Lucy has pointed out), happen to my Dad's, he on his 3rd 'beater since 2002.

Either get a new one, or go for a Time Atac which have a similar feel but felt a lots more secure, especially when you can swap the cleat round to make it harder to unclip.

  • I've heard a lot of eggbeater fans change to Atac's. Probably the best choice.

  • I included, but that mainly because I wouldn't want to ride eggbeaters on a fixed wheel bicycle.

  • I had used Atacs for years on my cross bikes, switched to eggbeaters 6 months ago because I need knew peddles and was intrigued how good the mud clearence would be. Very disappointed to say the least.

  • you need knew peddles?

  • especially when you can swap the cleat round to make it harder to unclip.

Err. You can do this with crank brothers pedals too.

I've moved from egg beaters to candys, same ease of entry just more support under foot when descending and re-mounting on the cyclocross bike. However as said I don't think they're the best for using single speed/fixed because they can uncleat under heavy load, for use geared on the other hand I can't fault them.

  • you need knew peddles?

Ed mate, considering how difficult some of your posts are to understand, you are probably the last person to pull someone up...

  • I know, it's just too hard not to quote it...

  • I've heard a lot of eggbeater fans change to Atac's. Probably the best choice.

Wow! I must be the only cyclist to change from Atac's to eggbeaters!

I used Atacs in a cyclocross race, got to the first dismount, ran through a bit of mud, jumped back on my bike, only to be met by losing a lap due to unclogging the cleats!

Utter rubbish for cyclocross, great for road cycling and fixed as they hold the foot firm.

  • Sound logical, eggbeater are great for mud that's without a doubt, does make sense since you be unclipping a lots in cyclocross than MTB.

  • Eggbeaters are great for off road and single speed. Easier to enter and pull out.
Tried ATACs and they are tighter feeling all over. Harder entry and less movement (or for me at least as my sole was contacting the pedal). This was a benefit when riding fixed but a loss when riding singlespeed.

My Eggbeaters are now 6 years old and they are certainly loose so guess the springs give a bit after a while. My feet go in and out of pedals so easily I hardly notice but I have never unclipped unintentionally.

My ATACS are left rusting away in the garage (the rust started within a month of use!)
