So my Transformer Prime isn't arriving tomorrow, despite the fact Asus said it was. What they neglected to mention is that the grey one is going out tomorrow, anyone who ordered the gold one has to wait another week. Funny that they never mentioned this when they made a big fuss about the Prime being out on the 12th and Ice Cream Sandwich being available for it by then (it came out the other day from what I can gather). In fact, they've still not mentioned it - eBuyer (who I pre-ordered from) told me, but it's definitely not just them - the grey ones are starting to ship out but no sign of the gold yet.
This is the least of my worries though - the metal rear case is causing some problems. It looks nice:
But the original spec for the Prime had a GPS listed, unfortunately it doesn't work well apparently, so Asus have now removed it from the spec. There is also a lot of speculation that it affects wi-fi, although a lot of people don't seem to be having problems with this. I don't care about the GPS, but this is a wi-fi only tablet - it needs wi-fi that works properly!
Asus denied that the metal case was the cause of the problem, but at CES they unveiled a new superior 'Transformer Prime 700', with a 1920 x 1200 HD screen and, wait for it, a redesigned back instead of the solid metal one to increase the signal gain:
This being launched despite the fact they haven't shipped out most of the current Primes yet. It's pretty much a textbook example of how not to launch a product and how not to treat your customers.
Personally I'm trying to decide whether to cancel my pre-order or not. I could accept the delivery and then test the wi-fi, thoroughly. I don't really want the hassle of doing that, but then most people who've got them so far seem to be happy with the wi-fi performance and Asus are insisting they will still be producing the original Prime and that the HD version is a 'prime' Prime...
