Use that VV the cranks look pretty solid.

...and make sure you DON'T x-thread the crank puller! ;)
(spray oil before threading the puller onto the crank, has to go by hand at the beginning) -

most dumb threads don't bother me. most... but when making the dumb thead clearly took more time than using google would have...

might be a repost so I rather wake this old thread up than starting a new one.
was trying removing my hussefelt cranks from my charge iron. Did the usal thing skrew in the crank removal tool (something like this) but it just ate it. screwed it all the way in. tryed to pop the little metal lid that came with it on and try again but same result.
Looking at the crank the hole that normaly is square was round. I'm guessing its that weird bmx standard but not quite sure. anyway. how do I get the cranks off?

Hello all,
Today I got a Condor brand crank extractor and the end bit (that pushes up against the BB spindle) snapped off whilst getting the crank arms off the BB.
They were pretty tight on, but I can only imagine to recommended levels, as they were installed by/at Fitzrovia cycles a couple of months ago.
Would I be right in asking Condor for a replacement, or just take it as one of those things that happens? ta!

I've got the exact frame to Robadob on page 7 peugeot Esprit.
I've been removing rusty parts (and when i say rusty I mean rusty) with electrolysis
which has been working a treat.........until i set to remove my cranks with a crank extractor. The main bolt doesn't screw all the way in to
the crank's thread and when i apply enough force, Only the thread fooks up!!!!
Now my crank arms' threads are torn and I still can't remove my crankset for BB maintenance

i'm trying to get some old cranks of an early 80's peugeot without success.
my park ccp-22 appears to be slightly too small a thread. i can just pop in the nut part without screwing it at all which isn't ideal.
any idea what sort/size of tool i might need to get them off?
-
• #161
that's quite odd. AFAIK most pugs got standard size threads on their cranks as long as the cranks are their original ones. have you tried another crank extractor tool? try maybe a local bike shop. they might do it for a fiver. The very last resource is an angle grinder.

Check Sheldon Brown for any threading oddities.

Stronglights? Some of the older stronglights had slightly larger extractor thread bore and needed a special tool. You can find the tools still but you are better off calling your LBS and making sure they have the right tool.
Do not take it to BLB [/forumlore]

they are Solida cranks. there are pics on this thread...

I think you have the right tool. What you need is to give the threads a really good clean with a small brush (old toothbrush) and some paraffin or other solvent. When they are clean you can inspect the threads for damage. Clean the crank puller in the same way.
Grease the threads up and try again.Sorry i misunderstood. I thought you meant the extractor was too big.

So i was changing my cranks, thinking it was a simple job, got the driveside done, but as i was using the puller on the non driveside, i noticed that the read on the crank was actually rounded, so i cannot remove it from the axle at all, is there anything i can do?

Can't remember where it was but someone was talking about this very thing this week (somewhere else on the forum). Apparently if you go to a car mechanic and ask to borrow a ball joint separator it should do the trick.
Looks like this:

Happened to my girlfriends bike a few weeks ago, I put the bike frame laid on a cushioned surface with the crank arm hanging over the side and hit it with a hammer as close as I could get to the BB - it worked after about 3 hits but the crank arm did get abit fucked tbh.

..morse taper wedges were used on the other thread:

That would have been me, you even used the same picture as I did.

^ I thought it was the same picture most clear one that came up on an image search, couldn't remember who suggested it though. Sorry if I stole your thunder.

No worries, I learn that trick from someone else anyway.

I've got a bearing puller that works in such situations. Much less likely to fuck anything up than wedges/ball joint splitters/hammers.

Is that a gorgeous baby blue fixie I see before me?
