That scale thing gets the size of the observable universe wrong. It's not just the same in light years as the age of the universe in years, the way the universe expands kind of means that everything gets further away from everything else as the space in between expands. So light originating from something more than 14 billion light years away can still reach us because all the distances involved used to be much smaller; after travelling for say 5 billion years a photon will be more than 5 billion light years away from whatever emitted it as the space "behind" it expanded. This explanation sucked really hard because I am just a science fiction fan and general geek not a scientist (I can't maths), but you are on the internet so it shouldn't be hard to find a good one.
