There is more dish on an 8-speed hub than a 7-speed hub, due to the wider cassette. That makes for a slightly weaker wheel.
Good point, I guess maybe the 7 speed stx hub I saw might be best for the job then.
MTB spacing was 130 once long ago. It's a very old frame (for an MTB).
