Downtube shifter keeps moving

Posted on
  • The shifter that controls the chainset side keeps moving back after 5 seconds of cycling. Really bugging me. Took it to a guy who inspected it for a few mins said it was strange for it to be happening. It has been tightened.

He said there is a possibility that maybe the washer might be broken or something?

I'm not really experienced with tube shifters, any ideas?

    My baby...

  • ^nice bike!
The shifter needs friction to work, so may be oily, or the friction washer (a plastic one usually) might be worn. Take it apart, carefully, clean it with detergent or something and put it back together and see if that helps. Sometimes the outer part cracks, and then won't apply any pressure. Second hand shifters are pretty cheap if you need a new one

  • I grease the inboard washer and the stud itself to prevent corrosion due to water ingress, but not the friction washer. Just a very light smearing of grease - wiping it with greasy fingers is enough.

  • Gonna check it out in the morning. Will report back.

Thanks for the compliment. My bike is sexy.

    Many thanks! =]

  • I checked it out, and it seems alright. But could this issue by linked to my next issue?... :'(
