White spirit cleans gumwalls and whitewalls up fine, both on my girlfriend's Raleigh roadster tyres and the cheap-ish Schwalbe 700cs that I used to have on my beater. I haven't noticed any damage to the rubber - but I don't know if they're natural rubber or synthetic, or if that would make a difference.
I'd say as long as you clean it off with plenty of water it should be fine. Perhaps soak an old tyre in the stuff to see what it does.
