  • damn, didn't think of that.
    will do :D

  • Thought I’d bring this old thread back to life as like the original poster Wicksie I'd like to do a tour of 40 ish miles day for 2 or 3 days.

To complicate things slightly I will leaving from London and my mate will be going from Exeter. We were hoping to both get the train somewhere to meet up and then start the tour.

It sort of rules out the previous suggestion of Devon as that won’t be much of a break for him.

I’d be very grateful for any ideas?
    Thanks

  • You could get the train to Lyndhurst and do a route in New Forest one day (just about big enough to do a 40 mile round trip in), camp there for the night, and the next day cycle along the seafront and over the ferry to the Purbecks (stop in Swanage for fish and chips) and camp there that night, then the next morning get the train back from Wareham or Weymouth. Nice places to cycle - some parts of the Purbecks might be a little hilly if you're carrying a tent fixed-gear though.

  • Are you planning on camping? You might struggle to find campsites that are open if you're going before March.

  • probably more likely to go for B&B. But we’re thinking of spring anyway.

  • @ lae
That sounds good to me thank you. My mate will be riding gears, I haven’t decided on fixed or gears myself yet. Depends where we end up going. Although going fixed and him carrying the load sounds good to me. Ha.

    Good bump.

I like the sound of the New Forest trip too!

  • The New Forest trip has been given the green light by my mate and he has roped in a third guy for it too. Just trying to decide on when to do it.

I'm quite excited about it and want to go ASAP but the genreal thought is that we'll wait until it warms up.

  • You can easily get up to 60+ mile loops around the New Forest, and probably twice that distance if you wanted. This
route is well worn, but the long open bits of moor are very exposed to head and cross winds, so probably best to be sure the weather is nice to get max enjoyment out of it.

  • Three hours on the train (£30-60 return fare) can get you to my folks B&B in the Lake District. Proper countryside there. Bike friendly of course. I've been meaning to organise a forum weekend trip up there for a while.

  • ooh! Looks lovely! And v reasonable rates - good shameless plug Ben!

    adds to list

  • the cotswolds?

Trains to Swindon, Oxford or any of the stops on the line from Oxford to Gloucester, it's nice, hilly, quintessentially English and not too far from either of you.

  • Nice plug Photoben.

If you organise a forum weekend trip I'd be interested.

    List?

  • DO NOT GET OFF AT GLOUCESTER! Stay on the train for the next stop to Cheltenham and hit the Cotswolds from there.

The only good thing in Gloucester is the train out and Burger Star. And my mum - please refrain from "your/poots' mum" jokes, ta.

  • agreed head up to the malvern hills, and there is stuff around broadway, chipping camden, great tew..
cotswolds and the vale of evesham ftw..

more than one hour out of town though..

  • if you want somewhere a little closer..

  • Our New Forest trip was planned for this weekend but has suddenly had to be postponed.
Now I've got this weekend free I'm after ideas for a 2 day cycle on my own.
Leaving from London. Do.t want to spend too much on the train as I'm a bit skint.
I like the idea of riding to some sort of sight or event. And I'd like some hills.
I'd be grateful for any ideas.
    Thanks
