  • Anyone doing the Dartmoor Classic on Sun? Tester - its your club organising isn't it?

Signed up for 106 miles of pain cave, possibly in 30 degree heat.

Places available on the day, hot and hilly.

  • I just had a go at The Long One, and I thought it was good.

The route had something for everyone; plenty of rolling ups and downs, some smooth flat sections for a leg stretch, and two or three long climbs. The roads felt a little more accommodating than in either Kent or Surrey; though mebe that's just me. The climbing was overestimated by quite a way, the website suggested a slightly intimidating 3600m, whereas my Garmin made it 2600m, which over 125 miles isn't too frightening. The grub was fair; though possibly a bit too much gel, and not enough grain (The Little Lumpy, an event in a similar spot earlier in the year, had more cake than a WI open day).

A top day out, and one I'd repeat.

  • Got a sportive coming up in a few months, 100mi, anyone got a good bit of reading or tips for training specifically. Beyond just knocking more miles out on the bike currently.

    Came round quick.

  • Looks like you're going up a wall at 16 miles!

  • Felt like it too. 4 hrs 7 mins. 30 minutes quicker than last year.

    Very hot day.

  • Beast of Exmoor with Pigfarmer and Sasmon today. 100k 2000m of climbing. 4hrs 25. Some stunning scenery, especially the climb out of Lynmouth. Saw one bloke riding fixed on a bamboo bike... Can't say that looked much fun.

    Anyone elso do it?

  • Hell of the Ashdown sign-up now open. I'm down, anyone else?

    Yes.

Cheers for the prompt. Now down for 0856 start.

  • Signed up for 0824. Time to start looking for numbers for good taxi firms in the Groombridge area.

  • Dartmoor Classic is open now too. June is a world away.

  • I did the Wiggle Wild Edric at the weekend; 98 miles of constant hills (and not lo-pro style constant downhill!) - it was relentless! I do fancy doing some more next year, though I need to do some serious training, legs were completely gone by 2/3 of the way round. I can recomend it if you want a challenge for next year...

  • Was going to do the WWE, but something came up and couldn't, route looked fantastic.
    How was the weather?

  • Freezing cold (I was the only person on the start line just wearing jersey/shorts) & really windy (felt like I was having to pedal just to get down hills!) - was a really good course though, beautiful views and some awesome steep ascents/descents...

  • After braving the 50 mph winds and rain of two years ago, I signed up for the Exmoor Beast again last Sunday (100k). It really is worth doing, well organized, tough and scenic. Two really tough climbs and lots of sapping undulations, but all the time the stunning countryside outweighs the pain.

I am a lot less fit this year than my last effort, but the better weather conditions allowed me to better my time by 15 mins. Having said the weather was better, it was still very dark, blowy and wet up on the moor and it tooks it's victims. Broken bones (2x clavicles and one femor - on different people I hope), chains, wheels and bikes.

    Wholly recommended.

  • Rim tapes?

  • Yup, 2 of them :-p
