I very much doubt this is true. I'm running a Rubber Queen 2.4 up front, and I think that's the widest/highest volume tyre among our "crew". I would definitely recommend the Rubber Queens, they seem great (although I don't have a huge amount to compare them to).
If you want something large up front , I hear that the WTB Weirwolf 2.55 is good (huge).
