  • This may sound like an uncharacteristically hippyish thing to suggest, and my previous book-exchange thread fizzled into nothingness, but general Christmassy inactivity has got me to thinking...

All of us have some skills or knowledge that other people would be interested to learn, but never quite bother to organise due to the hassle/expense of courses or whatever. So how about we teach each other? Enough of us on here know each other well enough to know if we'll get on in a teacher/student kind of deal...

Of course, none of us will be experts in whatever field we're exchanging, but we'll know more than nothing, and that's enough to get the ball rolling. If people want to go further, they can sort themselves out.

My thinking is that if there are material or logistical costs, then those should be paid for by the learner, but the time of the teacher should be offered free. If you're interested, post what you can offer/what you're interested in, and **sort out meetings via PM. **

    I'll start:

  • I can offer:
    Drums tuition,
    Snowboarding lessons,
    Bike maintenance/wheel building instruction,
    How to wheelie/bunnyhop/other basic tricks,
    How to make delicious stews,
A critique of your screenplay (I have a degree in this shit, and am much better at analysing than I am at creating...)

    Stuff I'm interested in:
    Gardening, particularly growing food,
    Cooking 'ethic' food properly,
    General DIY kind of things,
Playing an non-percussive instrument, but one which is easy to pick up...
Making useful things from wood/metal etc

On a separate but related note, I'm always looking for people to play squash and table tennis with, and also somewhere nearby to play that doesn't require membership.

  • I'm just going to list the more unusual skills**:

    I can offer:**

  • Dan, is there a decent dry slope around brum? I'm going snowboarding in the Cairngorms in February and would like to have session to get used to it again (if it's steep enough to actually make it challenging)

There's Ackers Trust, but it's not very good. I've never snowboarded on dry slope. I wouldn't worry about 'getting used to it' again. I learned snowboarding regular, before starting skating and realising I was actually goofy, then going back a year later, and picking it back up almost immediately.

  • Also, MsTrN and Benjam, I'm guessing you're in London, and this is a Birmingham thread.
